Thread: Lady Elliot Anchorage

    Lady Elliot Anchorage

What is Lady Elliot like for an anchorage. I fish out of Hervey Bay up NW breaksea area and was wondering if its worth the trip over to get a rest on trips when the weather is average. And does anyone fish the areas due east of Elliot in the 100-200 meters? Is it snapper/pearly/rosy job type country? Got to try some different areas to try and dodge the sharks.

As far as I know Tone the island doesn't give you much lee. Have you checked out the green zones in that area?

Thanks Smithy, That's what I'm hearing too. And a lot of the close in area to Elliot is no mooring too. All a green zone around it so it would add 20klm there and back out to the fishing spots. Thought some of the Bundy guys might head that way. Bit different to fishing out of Turkey back in the day.

    Hi Tony,

I've stayed around Elliot a few times in hope of getting out of the wind and seas when it's turned nasty. Unfortunately due to the size and shape of the island it doesn't offer much protection but this really depends on the direction of the wind and how strong it is. In a SE it's pretty good, NE isn't to bad but you still cop a bit and a SW just forget about it as you cop cross waves coming around both sides of the island even when your hard up against the reef line. It's certainly an option if it does turn nasty but as you say it's a bit out of the way for the fishing grounds. There's a bit of ground east on that 100 plus mtr line if your willing to put the time in.

    Cheers
    Greg

Thanks Greg. I will give it a miss and stick to riding it out overnight in the open water. Not a problem if the weather man gets it right.

Never been out there primarily due to it's reputation as a rolly anchorage. From Bundy it's pretty much same dist to get to Musgrave so that's what we've always done.
