    This Friday over South passage

Just inquiring if anybody is heading over the bar Friday morning
I have only been over it once before in the old boat and now have no reference marks so I'm hoping to follow somebody out. If not I'll just watch the bar for a while and then have a crack it could be a solo trip if I can't find a decki lol

    cheers scott

I took some photos from the air a while back http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...r-from-the-air

I read your post last night, and I was flying over their again today. I tried to take some pics with my phone, but its pretty hard when you are by yourself. I haven't got time to sort the photo's for a post at the moment, but I uploaded them from my phone to picassa here: https://picasaweb.google.com/1179078...eat=directlink

Its the last 20 or so images in the album. Most where just taken by pressing the button on the phone without actually looking!

I do remember doing the bar crossing corse will bill and there was 3 channels.
he advised us only to go the amity when on high tide but that was about 4-5 years ago

Don't use the most northeren channel,I believe it's closed due to sand.

Just go where the waves aren't. You have a low tide in the morning and a swell that is just over a metre on the decrease. You will be able to cross it easily with a bit of common sense. I went out last Sunday with a touch more swell and more from the north and it was easy. If you are heading north you can sneak around the corner of Moreton at the moment fairly easily. Just stick about a 100 m off the beach and keep an eye on the depth. There is a bank to scoot across and you are there. Pretty deep water apart from the last 300m or so. We came back in through amity end in a full flood out tide and it was ok. Should be fine to go out through there in the morning. I reckon low tide gives the advantage of seeing where the banks are. Good luck.

Thanks guys for the help Since I had no decki I went today
and went through the middle channel about 100m from the rufas king
shallowest was 2.3m and I went over at the bottom of the tide.
then came back through the same on the way back about 1 hour after the top of the tide so a couple of pressure waves but nothing to bad

thanks for the advice everyone. Cheers Scott

How much does a weather event such as this change the structure of a bar?
will we be looking for new channels now ?
is it more likely to dump more sand or move the sand away with the huge swell?

Ps.....it would be good to watch the sp bar today at low tide.....

    cheers Scott

Pretty solid easterly swell today. Would make it interesting. I doubt whether you would even get close enough to get a get look! I reckon it can change daily with just the water that moves through it. I am always looking for a new channel and only use my gps to get to the start of the bar then just follow my nose. The only time I go across in the dark is if the point lookout wave rider is showing a metre or less of swell from the south and a high tide. The only worry then is the Rufus King!
