hi all, just curious... what do you guys consider avg hr on motors per year?... a random stranger i suppose... just quote me today that i either cant fish or i troll too much at the ramps.... both twin 60 motors are 600ish, i've added 450hrs since i got them 2nd hand.. about 3years now... am i looking for rebuild anytime soon? altho i've seen motors in 1300hrs... should i be worried
I wish I could get a few more hours on mine you must get out a fair bit.

I do an avg of 100hrs a year give or take and I mostly chuck lures around rather then troll. So yours hours seem pretty normal, have a mate who puts about 200 to 250 hrs on in a year. As long as they are serviced regularly you should get many more hours out of them.
New four strokes are as reliable as new car engines. It's the pieces bolted to them that normally pack it in. Keep your general services up and they will power past 2000hrs without issue.

I've fished on a charter boat in NZ that had 5000+ hours on a 225 yamaha four stroke and it ran like a clock. Religious oil changes by owner and constant (nearly every day) running was his recipe.

440 hrs in 3 years for my F115. Probably pretty average I would imagine.
754 hours in 4 years for my yammy 40 4 Stroke.

The vast majority of people do less than 100hrs per year. Just check out boat ads - most of them have motors with less than 500hrs, even for 10+ year old boats. Think of it this way: Even if you manage to get out every single weekend, and drive 5 hours each time, you're only looking at ~250 hours.Originally Posted by mitc69

I think it was smithy who once mentioned charter boats with up to 5 or 6000 hours.
I have a 115 hp 2 stroke mercury from 2003 which is showing just on 210 hrs, which if correct seems pretty low. How can I be sure that what I see on the clock is correct? I am the third owner, and the engine does look in good nick and seems to run as it should but there's always that naging feeling, could the clock have been wound back
With older motors it can be very hard to tell the exact hours. If you're worried get a mechanic that knows Merc to look it over. Even, high compression across all cylinders usually a good indicator that it's OK. Just service it regularly, replace the bits that need replacing and enjoy the fishing (and keep paying your VMR membership)
11 yr old 60 hp 2 stroke mariner 900 hr and still runs great ,never a problem but I have it serviced almost every year and only run quicksilver 2 stroke oil . It recently had a compression test and all cylinders where 5 lb of each other .
A bad days fishing has got to be better than any day at work......
