Old Tinny Needing A Engine

Three people with their gear would be downright dangerous in a tinny that size . Personally i would not even consider rowing it. much less put a 15hp on it.
I had a quintrex traveller with a 8 hp on it and used to plane ok with 2up but boat was very tender and you had to be very careful unless you wanted to go for a swim Definitely a calm water craft and under 10knots of wind,

i was looking on gumtree after posting my last msg as im selling a motor bike on there, i found some nice engines mostly around the $1000-$1200 mark but took into conseration some are 10 years old

there were a couple that peaked my interest 9.8-9.9hp 4 strokes built in the late 1990's

but the two strokes arnt really worth it they were early to mid 2000's model 15hp for $1200-$1500

the 15hp parsun is $1600 new i think?

i have never seen this on any portable outboard? sounds cool tho

i bought a new 18hp tohatsu about 5 years ago for a tinny i had and being a old technology motor while downrigging it was annoying reaching mid way back on the engine to engauge gears all the time

i like the more modern tech engines with the gear change in front of the cowling

just picked up what looks to be a bargain from ebay, its a yamaha 8hp late model for $60 it has a bummed gearbox from water ingestion and missing carby but for less than $60 what a steal

ive already picked up the engine

does anyone know what year model 8CM, 6G1-S is?

just for shits and giggles do u think this gearbox is salvageable? ive seen similar jobs done before but the welding and machining might over cost a replacement gearbox however i do have a aluminium mig welder with spool gun but i dont think i have enough experience to do this job

From the photos, it looks pretty much identical to mine which I believe is early 2000's. Great reliable little engine.

going by the decal pattern, it was made somewhere from the late 90's thru to the early 2000's.

Yes, when I was trying to to date mine, the decal was the best indicator. Knowing the trailer was early 2000's, I figured the motor was probably from about the same time.

thanks guys i removed the seized gearbox the offending seal was the prop shaft seal that let all the water into the gearbox and failed

i done a compression test and it read 100/98 PSI so not bad at all

ok so heres a problem, these gearboxes seem to be really hard to find second hand in oz

there is one on USA ebay for $350 delivered

a new gearcase will cost $300 plus delivery

i just got back from my local alloy welders and he said it'll be $300 to repair the cracks

does anyone know of a way to some how remove the prop shaft? its seized in place and i snapped both lugs for using to pray the prop shaft out

since everything is going to cost around $300 i may weld it my self just need to get the shaft out

I would be simply biding my time and keeping an eye on ebay and gumtree for a motor that has a seized powerhead and make one out of two. You could contact a few outboard wreckers to see what a second hand leg assembly is worth.

yeah your right i tore it all apart it was far worse than i imagined

i contacted FNQ outboard wreckers who usually has most parts i need they didnt have a gearbox

there are one of two in the US i may snap up but they are pricey with delivery

I have one of these mercs, the 9.9 and 15's with he gears on the throttle are brilliant and this is the US model. The ones with the gears on the side of the engine are the re badged tohatsu's

a couple glorious pictures of inside this gearbox

ive removed the rear gear from the prop shaft but the front gear wont budge

im going to drop the prop shaft and gears into a hydrochloric acid bath to remove all the salt than ill wash and inspect the gears to see if there usable than oil them up and put them on the shelf in the shed for a rainy day

the drive shaft was seized alone by its self just in its sleeve that was a mission to get out of the gearbox and in doing so i bent the cir clip lip so i ruin the drive shaft but not to worry

so from this gearbox i salvaged the gears, prop shaft,propeller,clutch dog,water pump minus impeller

if i dont manage to find another 6-8hp yamaha with blown powerhead the bright side is i have a working powerhead to salvage and would fetch a couple hundered bucks on ebay, win win for my $56 investment

Bin the lot M8. It's Kangaroo Edward. Pitted gears, shafts etc, just wasting your time. Unless you looking for a bit of experience pulling em apart.
