    New fishfinder or....

Hi people I currently have a lowrence elite 4x I bought for my kayak and now that I have a boat was thinking about upgrading to a better model with chartplotter. What would the advantages of getting a fishfinder / chartplotter be against using my elite 4x and installing navionics on my phone for navigation that I can buy for $22?

If you can easily mount your phone within good view, the Navionics app works very well. it is a bit of a pain having to pick the phone up and using the touch screen instead of a fixed chartplotter with buttons & cursor though. For the money though you can't argue. I'm pretty sure it's only $18 on Google Play. If you browse the mapping at home on WiFi, it will download that part of the map to your phone. That way, if you run out of signal while on the water, you'll still have the chart with all of the markers. I used my phone for a while but then got a Lowrance Elite 4 HDI combo.
    Cheers,
    Leigh (Kero).

Just remember that when in direct sun for long lengths of time I know my iPhone will go into overheated mode unlike my chart plotter so if you can shade it somewhat you would be ok .. Matt

Fx rain or water is not a problem with a lifeproof case which I have always had on my iPhone's and they do them for samsung I think , Matt

i use iSailor, I think it's a bit exxy but it's bliss on an iPad (make sure it's an 3G iPad as only them had the GLONASS), i believe navionics is right up there as well, as long as your tablet has build in GPS and a good case you should be ok, I don't see the benefit of a separate or combo plotter when I have my iPad, two screens are better than a little 5" split screen and with the money you save you can get a decent sonar

With Navionics you download (free) any areas of map you want from the internet before you go out of cell range.
You could download all of Australia if you want to fill your phone up, never know when you'll need Perth in a hurry.
