Thread: Charging through a circuit breaker?

    Charging through a circuit breaker?

Recently fitted a new electric trolling motor and have it running off of a 120ah AGM battery......I have wired it from battery through a 50a circuit breaker then to an Anderson plug.

When I charge the battery I just plug it strait into the Anderson plug where the trolling motor is fed from.....

Question is......back charging through a circuit breaker.....ideal or not?

My new Powertech charger a 15a model shit itself last night and had only charged the battery 2-3 times......took it back and they swapped it no worries......plugged in the new charger and checked on it 15mins later and the temp indicator light for the charger was on.......unplugged it let cool down and plugged back in again and all seems fine now but I was just wondering is there too much resistance for the charger going through the circuit breaker?

Only running the battery to Anderson plug roughly 1.5-2mtrs and I have used 6mm wire or 6 gauge whatever......it's a bigger diameter than the charger which appears to be 4mm........I thought it would be all ok.......every connection it top notch and double wall heat shrinked so I'm confident my terminations are not playing a part in this....

Thinking that the chargers are not really up to the task even though their specs say they are.

Provided that the breaker is actually ok it should be fine. Only way to tell for sure is to put a metre across it and check the resistance. I would check from the plug to the terminal at the battery. The charger should be able to handle more than 15 minutes at full output before overheating.

Yeah I'm thinking that the charger is the problem?..........powertech is the jaycar/road tech marine branded stuff......I did a bit of a Google search on them and they seem to be ok......no dodgy stories I could find.

See how it goes ATM but thinking i'll be taking it back and upgrading to a Projector or C-tek IMO.......can't be bothered stuffing around with it.

my 15a ctek has a sensor on the neg battery connection.clamps direct to batt post and checks temp and adjusts automaticly.does the powertek have the same? read here.. http://www.ctek.com/au/en/chargers/MXS%2015

Yes Powertech has a separate temp sensor for the battery......but plugging it in to the Anderson plugs mean that it will not be in contact with the battery.
