Bears Boat Hire at Dolhes Rocks

Does anyone know what happened to them? We went down their recently and they were closed. From a bit of digging it appears they closed about 2 years ago. Was a good setup with not only the hire business, but also the bait shop and icecreams. They had about 20 boats so wondering how it went from a seamingly thriving business into nothing.

Yeah Cheech, it's been a while now since they shut the doors. Hired their boats a lot back in the day before I had a rig. had the tackle and bait store which made it all very simple.
I can remember 4 Boat Hire operations working that system (Bridge Boats at Hayes Inlet where the tractor would run you out over the flats, Sanderson Boat hire at the Southern end of the Hornibrook, Deepwater Bend Boat Hire and Bears), so sad to think they are all gone. I hired them all, just depended where I would fish or crab that particular day......... and they were cheap !

Sorry if this is a silly question, but could the massive increase in popularity of kayaks been a reason for the demise of such a business?

Hi Craigie, been a while. I didn't know about the other 3. Maybe the margins just were not there. Maybe I need to buy a house down there and start up my own Cheech's Charters and boat hire.

I've seen a boat hire company set up recently in Cabbage Tree Ck. They anchor/sit downstream from the VMR. They seem to be there on and off.
