    Viper drum winches

Looking at getting a drum winch for my 6m Hydrofield. I've come across the viper winches on ebay and also various online fishing shops.

They are going for around $1200-1400 with everything needed to set it up (including 100m rope and 8m chain) bar a wiring kit.

They also have a 5 year warranty.

Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with these winches and if there any good or not.

    Thanks, Mitch.

been selling them for many years now. bell marine has come a long way since their earlier drums. the distance between ..well everything is a lot better". the ss motor housing is a lot chrisper and wired motor is a lot better than the heatshrink option of the past.

they are not bad. depending on rope.. they are one of the faster non freewall winches

Oh ... for the record.. steel drum music is amazing

These are a great anchor winch and as Moose has said, they have come a long way in their development over recent times.
I sell up to 5 a week and I have been shipping them all around the world as well with one on its way to Noumea right now.
The Viper 1000 is suitable for you boat otherwise the 1500 is great for anchoring out in deeper waters.
The 6mm double braid is definitely the preferred rope that most people seem to buy.

Did like to use it for anchoring in deeper water around 60m so I was going to try and get 125m of 6mm double braid plus chain. I've only seen the 1000 models for sale. Is the 1500 much dearer?

Just noticed you posted here regarding anchor winches, I'm also having an anchor winch fitted as well as my new outboard but the anchor winch I purchased is the mini NG StressFree model. A little dearer than the Viper model but hopefully worth the expense.

    Re: Viper drum winches

I had the first generation viper 800w for about 5 years I reckon on my 560 haines and it never let me down the only reason I upgraded was because It was so slow.
The new one's are meant to be pretty quick tho.
Now I have the new loan star GX2 and this thing is super fast and powerful and I'm very happy so far.
The price we pay for winches these days is amazingly cheap compared to when they first came out.

I ended up getting the 1000w viper pro. Awesome winch for the $$. Think it cost me $1400 all up with 100m dyneema rope and 8m of chain and all the wiring cables. wiring. Defiantly a worthwhile mod.

    Re: Viper drum winches

Any of you blokes with the viper using the combo switch/circuit breaker face plate that comes with it? Can I get a measurement of it? (need to see if I can fit it on my dash)

And do you need to tie off to a bollard with the viper? Some of the cheap chinese drums recommend you do and the more expensive ones say you don't but haven't seen anything about the viper pro series 2 1000.

And the cheapest I've found so far is $1420 delivered with a free chain sock from reeltackle.com.au Anyone bought from them before of found it cheaper elsewhere?
