That has become a pretty standard format but it really doesn't matter until you enter in waypoints from another GPS. Where the confusion comes in is when people have old marks from units that were set in degrees minutes and seconds and they enter them in to a machine in degrees, minutes and points of minutes. A typical give away with lists of waypoints that only have two decimal places is to look at the last two digits - if there is nothing over 59, it is a pretty good chance it is dd.mm.ss and will need conversion. This of course is not an ironclad method of being correct. Sometimes you just have to put the mark in twice and go to both.
