Caught this out of cairns, Maybe a dark tailed sea perch or hussar but the orange "mauri" marks on face are not right. Tasted good...

Ok educate the rest of us oh wise ones. I originally thought mangrove jack definitely not hussar though.
Maybe Red bass? If so it is a no take due to ciguatera
Looks like a Moses perch..........Lujanis Russeli.........or Russels Snapper........it's a big one if it is.........if I'm right it's lost it's defiant black spot near the tail wrist as Fingermark do to some degree.
Definatly not a Red Bass those things have big nostrels and are more cylindrical with bad ass teeth.
Generally if ya can't ID it don't eat it.......or keep it!

Jees it shocks me how many guesses are offered on Fish ID posts
how anyone could think it's possibly a Jack or a Red Bass is beyond me. They are both radically different to this Dark Tailed Sea Perch in the pic. I've also caught quite a few off Cairns.

Yep a Dark tail, easy pick as Odes said.
Awesome thanks heaps guys, It was over 40 which I new was more than legal for a latjunus species. Its identical to the "features" of a SM nanny, same dorsal and anal spines and even same amount of scales between lateral and anal. Eye foward though like a jack but without the similar canines. Grants only have a brief description on the fingermark page. Good chewin too, opally flesh like the hussar.
Thats a good point you make a out taking it being over 40 in the lutjanis brigade. There is another fish in this general appearance group called a paddletail which is however a no take species. Better to familiarise oneself about its appearance as in is no take because of ciguiterea.
