You cant beat Grant's book called Grant's Guide to Fishes, more like encyclopaedia.
I feel very lucky to meet with him many times and have a personally signed copy as we leave across the road from him.

Yep, can't beat Grant's Guide. Still have my copy I purchased I think when I was 20 years old. Use it all the time and is always at hand. (I think that makes the book over 30 years old)

Another vote for Grants.Mine's over thirty years old and is totally waterproof,best reference book I've seen for general ID and info.

Another vote for Grants Guide as well. I also have a book called Marine Fishes of tropical Australia and South East Asia by Gerry Allen and published by the West Australian Museum which is very good and has lots of stuff less likely to be encountered.
