    Marine Radio Interference

I would like to fit a 27meg radio to my boat. I run a 150hp Verado Mercury motor and I've been told it will cause static with the am frequency. Has anyone run a 27meg with one of these motors. KP

Your probably not going to hear any radio with that donk running, unless you troll with it a lot I wouldn't worry about interference.

Have a similar problem with 90 etec. Have been told it's same frequency but maybe a better quality radio would work

Stu I had an etec before my merc and had to buy a vhf . Challenged the salesman about the problem and just said sorry I forgot to tell you. KP

I just checked with a mate who has a 200 Verado on his Cruisecraft.

He runs a dual battery system with one battery dedicated to everything electrical on the boat, including radios. Engine is on a separate battery.

He told me that he runs a 27 meg with no issues at all. Just keep it on the separate circuit.

by the way, the Verados are whisper quiet at idle, not like the Opti's. As quiet as any other 4 stroke at speed.

Pretty much the same with any motor. On the older motors a suppressor was sometimes used but with the modern electronic control systems it is way more complex. Any device that presents ac ripple to the power supply will create noise. As well as the stuff that comes through the electrical system there will most likely be an "airborne" component to the noise as well that can not be easily gotten rid of. Nearly every electrical device on a boat apart from a standard light globe tends to interfere with 27MHz. VHF is a lot more immune to noise but even then interference is still a very real possibility.

Thank you for the replies very good advice. I think I'll fit a 27meg and connect it to the house circuit. I have a VHF radio already fitted the 27Meg is for backup purposes if the VHF fails again. I have owned my Verado for 2 years now and I just love the big black Merc. No way would I ever run a 2 stroke again. KP

Unless you have other uses for the 27MHz, I would simply fit a second VHF. Depending on where you are, there will be plenty of times a 27MHz will be next to useless. The price difference between the two is negligable these days.

Yeah, I tend to agree, 27meg is getting scarce now, still around, but getting less and less, maybe just buy a hand held one?
