watched a review of mercury and streaker boats, comparing the new 115 merc 4 stroke versus the mercury 125 opti.
was done at a lake, both motors on the 5.7 mtr streaker navigator.
would post it up, but not very comp savey !
anyways, upshot of it was.
at holeshot and top end, the 115 4 stroke won hands down
3 or 4 attempts at hole shot were taken, each time the 115 was quicker by a big margin.
top end saw the 125 opti at wot get 61km per hour
the 115 at wot was 69 km per hour
the merc tested was the the big gearbox option
was impressive reading, the 115 proved better at all speed ranges, for obviously noise, but also economy.
guess the old theory of more poke in a 2 stroke days are numbered, great news for us wanting to repower and have weight issues. the difference was the 115 was 7 kg lighter than the 125 opti.
certainly has quelled my concerns about performance comparrissons.
the 115 is obviously a bit more coin, but service costs were quoted as cheaper than an opti service.
Also those new Merc 4 strokes are supposed to be user friendly on the the home servicing front which would be a big tick for some doing the essentials.
yes, they confirmed that on the review about easier home servicing.
for me, the doubt was always performance based, but this certainly quelled that with it totally out performing the opti 125, which by all accounts was considered favourable performance wise.
the streaker that they tested with has the same deadrise as mine and is slightly heavier, so it was a good comparison for me.
I didn't want to loose to much punch if I did re power to the 115 4 stroke, im currently running a merc saltwater 4 cylinder 125, which is a 2006 model, which offers great hole shot and about the same wot as the tested 115, but take mine over 4000 rev's and you need a fuel tanker running behind you ! so off shore trips are carefully planned. So the performance test has confirmed to me that performance wont be effected by re powering to the 115.
