    Linking HDS units

    Hi guys
i remember seeing a thread on linking Hds 2 systems in tandem. Can anyone direct me to this please? I have a HDS 5 and a Hds 10 both gen 2. I' want to use the HDS 10 as the Sonar and downscan while using the HDS 5 as GPS or chart plotter only.
I can change the headsets and use the 10 with the current power cable transducer, structures scan and sidescan. If I use a separate power cable and link the units with an Ethernet cable I can then use the 5 as a chart plotter. Is this correct?

Yes mate just use an Ethernet cable and you can do whatever you like then with this units. I have two linked up and it's awesome as the waypoints are also shared.

    Thanks mate,
any suggest on the best place to get the Ethernet cable, I only need a short one of about 40cm.

Im guess u already have one ethernet cable for structure scan. All you need is another one. Connect into 2nd port on structure unit. Then you can choose which unit you want as source and share all the info

Best place would b ebay or your local lowrance dealer.

You only need one cable. All information is shared through it. I think 6 foot is the shortest you can get.

If you don't find anyone to buy one pm me and I'll let you know who I got it from ($40)

    Re: Linking HDS units

My understanding is that Ethernet and NMeA2000 networks share some of the same information but neither ethernet or NMeAa 2000 shares everything. Lots of people have both kinds of networks so that literally everything possible to be shared, is.

It depends on what info you want to share between units as to what is the best choice for you. Sonar sharing is definitely Ethernet territory.

Here is a link to a Lowrance pro-staff article that tells you what data is shared over NMEA2000 vs an Ethernet network: scroll to the end and there is a really good table that shows you what data is shared by which kind of network.

Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

    Re: Linking HDS units

    Hi guys
As stated above I have a HDS 5 and Hds 10 both gen 2. By simply changing the head unit from the 5 to 10 I should have the same data as before but with a screen twice the size. I intend to use the HDS 5 as Gps or chart plotter only. If I use the new ( HDS 10) power cable and install the Hds 5 as a stand alone unit and instal the navionics card will it work as a Gps without having to connect by an Ethernet to the Hds 10? Thus avoiding the need to have an extra cable at all.

hds gen 1 units wont be able to share map data. it will be able to share waypoints but yep. no map data.

Moose both of mine are Gen 2. Will this mean I can share map data?

Yes, this should work, but you're better off getting the $40 Ethernet cable so you can make either unit do what ever you choose. Sometimes it's good to have a big chart plotter and sometimes it's good to have a big sounder screen. I've got a NSS 7 and 12 connected by Ethernet and it's great to be able to swap screens for different situations.

yeah so one map card in one unit will be displayed on both.

    Hi all
well I have installed my new HDS gen 2 ( not touch ) headset. I just replaced the previous HDS 5 headset and plugged the cables back in. It all seemed to be working fine but when I went to split screen Sonar / Structure it shows sonar and sidescan not downscan. I have forgotten to do something?

Go onto the structure screen by holding pages. Hit menu and go to view. Either down/sidescan. Alternatively you can go to pages and select structure +structure + sonar for a 3 way screen. Down side and sonar.
