Hi,
I am a brand new member looking for some advice. I am holidaying with family on the canal at Mooloolaba and wanted to take the kids around into the Maroochy river. Is it a difficult crossing to go in across the bar as we will have the boat moored in the Moolooba canals?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
first, what sort of boat are we talking about here?
second, how experienced is the intended skipper and how confident in his/her ability with that particular boat?
third, although I am not particularly familiar with the Maroochy river, a quick look at Google maps will show you that the bar is very shallow and silted up.
Prevailing easterly winds like we are having at the moment will make it very dodgy and dangerous, I would think.
Best bet would be to contact the local coastguard or volunteer marine rescue groups and they will be able to give you the latest on conditions and some advice about what you are thinking of doing.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....
I haven't been there for a while for a look see but last I knew it was shallow and pretty sketchy. Some years ago had a pretty experienced client try and cross it while holidaying up there and got smacked pretty good - washed all the gear out of his UB. Probably better to put the boat on the trailer and tow it up or at least go for a drive and look see first.
Thanks very much for your help. I plan to speak to the local VMR first. I think I will also take the advice and put the boat in there and see it from the river side first.
Thanks again.
I cross it regularly in a 5meter centre console.(I sold it 2 months ago so havn't been over it scence) Always cross with clean water on the incoming tide when going out through the bar, mid tide and above is good. Coming back through the mouth on anytide is never an issue, as you can always sit behind a wave. The banks are quite long and you think your past the breakers your not. If you are not familiar with bar crossing at all put your boat on the tralier and drop it in at the ramp. If the swell on the beach is over 1m at marcoola, I normally launch from Mooloolabah, as there is no real channel just gotta wait for the lull. On days with no swell it's no worries.
