    Side Console and leaning underway.

I am thinking of changing from my Quintrex 4.7 Escape runabout to a side console. However I am concerned that many side consoles will lean underway with only one person aboard as I will often be the only occupant. I see that here are my side console boats starting at 4.2 m which surely must lean underway. So, what size side console do I need to avoid the lean? p.s. I am overweight at 82 kg and also don't want a center console. Thanks in advance, cheers Winston.

The size of the console is only part of your problem. There is also your weight, the forward controls of the outboard, cables and everything else you will be putting there. It is going to lean to that side and you can try to compensate by putting batteries etc on the opposite side but how do you compensate for your weight?
Trim tabs will do the job but are you willing to spend the money?

Like ozynorts said, cause it's a side console there's more weight on one side. You'll have to position eskie's, tackle boxes, batteries etc on the opposite side. The only thing is when you walk to the side with all the weight positioned on it it may lean excessively. As for what size to get to avoid the lean I don't know but the bigger the boat the less lean you would get I think.
I agree Trim tabs would be the best option to avoid the hassel with having to move weight around constantly. Dear though.

What's the difference to a runabout if you are alone in the boat? Batteries etc... are some solutions. I have a side console and love it because you walk down the centreline of the boat. I feel I have more room than a centre console.

Good point. Same applies to both I would think.

I guess I was wondering who has something like a 449 Renegade or similar that uses it single-handed and what the lean is like. My Quinny is fine single handed but my Clark 427 runabout had the dreaded lean. I don't wand to buy something only to discover that it is a pain. Thanks for the replies. Cheers Winston. p.s. after a long stay in hospital I added 12 kg, bloody steroids.

I think with the runabout because you are closer to the bow and to the side, the lean is probably worse.

Winston I had a 455 topender and weigh about 75kg (anyone feeling jealous now?) and once it was on the plane you hardly noticed. It would have a slight lean if just trolling but did't really seem a problem. Must say the battery was on the other side but that is not a lot of weight. Trim tabs for that size boat is not worth it. If you are a lure chukker then just go for it as a side console is the best.

I have a bluefin side console and with the batteries on the other side to where I sit and it balances ok when on the plane and yes I weigh 80 kg sometimes I shift my esky around a bit not that it makes much difference ..Matt

its more a case of choosing a heavier boat setup. the heavier the boat once rigged the less it will lean. generally go for a full floor 4.5 or larger

had a renegade 490 SE with f70 yamaha for 8mth then sold it.. wasnt working out.. anything under 30knots it wont lean.. when you hit 30-45 knots expect to get lock on the left and become very unstable to control... so if your planing to island jump SE not the best option
