Thread: Garmin dual screen setup

    Garmin dual screen setup

A mate (Daintreeboy) has a pretty cool dual 7 inch lowrance setup with a gen2 7 inch touch screen and a second non-touch 7inch networked together. It works really really well running side scan on the touch screen and gps and standard sounder as a split screen on the other. We have found some awesome country without really trying with this setup and is a brilliant setup in a small boat The only down side with it is the occasional frustration trying to press the screen on the non-touch..............

Would love to setup a similar rig in my boat but centred around the new garmin chirp/side vu models - with the new 7 inch touch as the core - what is the most efficient/cost effective way to run a similar garmin setup - is the 70dv the best/only option as the second screen or would an older model network effectively? Or is there a better alternative keeping in mind I'm a garmin fan?

    Re: Garmin dual screen setup

From what I understand the 70dv is the best option.......it has down vu built in and come with the down vu tranceducer.......I;m a Garmin fan aswell having had the 4008,750s and 2x GMI 10's set up in my recently departed boat......unfortunatly none where compatable with the new structure/down vu gear available so I recently purchased the 7'' Downvu and will add the black box down the track. The 751xs will do multiple jobs and is NMEA 2000 but I sort of don't need that this time round so saved a good $500+ by going the downvu unit.

Having seen the HDS.NSS and the Garmin all side by side I feel it's really a very level playing field on all the units sounder wise and Garmin stands out for is GPS quality and the bonus of the in built blue charts.

I get your Garmin thing.......so simple and reliable........I still use my little 298 combo and will put it into it's 3rd boat as my 2nd unit.

so the new echomap and gpsmaps can now be networked to share info via the rj45 plug.. the 70dv is your cheapest option to run split systems
to save some coin you could run one 70dv and one 70dv sans transducer . share all the info anyway. or for a religious experience. a 751xs running chirp. and a 70dv running its broadband plus down vu

mate i have a 751xs with chirp and a 70dv connected with a eternet cable all works fantastic .
i use the 70dv as my plotter and 751 as main sounder but when trolling i split the 70 dv to map and dv works a treat that would be the best setup i recon on a budget

Cheers guys - pretty much exactly what I was looking for - am thinking I will go the xs as the main unit and a DV as second just wasn't sure if they could network together with new vs old models. Cost will be a factor at the end of the day - it's only a 5m centre console after all....

Currently still working with a 172c which is a brilliant little gps but screen is starting to die (rainbow corners)

What's the difference with the XS and the XSV models? I was recommending the XSV to my brother.

the xsv has side scan built in no module needed

Yep - space will be a premium under the console so xsv it will need to be - assume it can still network with the dv?
