Thread: Boat Ramp Ettiquette. Important Things

Re: Boat Ramp Ettiquette. Important Things

As I came back into Noosa ramp yesterday, a bloke was circling try to line his boat up on the trailer & was really struggling with the brisk NE wind. Wind from this direction tends to blow straight down the river.
Beached my boat & went & got my trailer. Pulled up & a bloke was in his vehicle ready to launch but just sitting in his vehicle. Told him its his turn, but he said no, I'm just watching these blokes??
Backed down, drove the boat on & parked in the rigging lane.
Ran back down & tried helping the guys, with a new Cruise Craft & not a clue. He couldn't work out the current vs wind so his buddy & I are waist deep guiding it on & eventually they were fine.
The bloke who was launching actually got out of his car & walked down the pontoon so he could watch.
This was the perfect example of an ignorant mongrel not jumping in & helping.
Again, my dogs are looking better every day!!

    Interesting Tony.

Sometimes there may be underlying issues that are not obvious , why a by-stander will not assist those in need.

Well done on taking the bull by the horns and lending a hand to those in need. What this will hopefully do is educate the novice, so in time they may do as you have done, and lend your expertise to a situation.

Maybe Phil, but as he was on his own & was launching by himself tells me he was reasonably experienced, & he did have 2 arms & 2 legs that propelled him down the pontoon just fine.LOL
    Maybe I just assumed??

Your are right in your assumption that he could have helped.... maybe there are other underlying issues other than physical. ??

    Ok ok…….
Maybe I just expect too much at times.
My old man brought me up to help anyone, any time & I just assume others would do the same.
When Juna & I first started launch & retrieve , it was very daunting, & we rarely had any assistance, but welcomed it when it came. We usually just got "come on mate, hurry up" so now anyone who needs help gets it,

Good on you Tony but be careful mate about putting yourself in dangerous positions if as you say the bloke doesn't have a clue. Mate of mine ended up with a pretty nasty gash to the leg from an oyster on the side of a ramp pontoon one day doing the same thing. The guy with the boat was super apologetic but that didn't help my self employed mate the following week while it healed up. Not saying don't help as I certainly still do - just pause and evaluate what can go a bit pear shaped.

Good on you Tony, it doesn't have to be much but rednecks are not welcome. today I was already in, tied up at the pontoon waiting for my brother to reverse the trailer, the wind and tide were opposite each other and another boat was approaching the pontoon it was no effort to help guide him in.

Mind you this morning when we rolled up we were derigging and a tinny passed me by straight to the ramp, into the water and then started derigging in the water up to their knees, my brother and I just shook our heads and waited, the car park was full but my brother saw someone leaving so his missus stood in the empty spot and the rednecks were about to pick the spot she said, sorry but my husband was in here and he parked crooked and is just going around again, they believed her but at the same time I am rolling around laughing my head off. A bit of karma😂

The entertainment value of this time of year must rate highly with rednecks, I took the Brother in law out for a quick flick, the ramp was mayhem with a few who can't reverse a trailer if their life depended on it, the new pontoon at weinam creek was full, about 5 boats all tied off on the cleats and not one of them looked like moving any time soon. One had mechanical problems, another had fuel problems and a few jerry cans involved, it reeked of fuel with the battery pulled out of it's mounting spot, another dude was trying to cast net livies between the boats, dragging mud and crap onto the pontoon. Yep! Every man for himself while I am trying to load my passenger, who weighs in at around 130kg and can't get into my boat any other way that using the pontoon. But while I noted all the antics of those around me, I arrived at the ramp expecting nothing less, and found my way around the wonders who only come out during Holidays, still managed to have a great day on the water. Bemuses me that people don't seem to prepare a rig well before using their them which in the main, could be classed as garden ornaments when not used regularly as boats, but soak up so much time at the launching site while they sort out issues.
    Rednecks paradise!

Obviously didnt read post patiently. Promptly blows up to using the F word. Lol!

mate, i repeat patience and tolerance alone doesnt solve problems, while they are great virtues. I walked over to a bloke 3 days ago derigging and prepping while having parked his boat on the centre of a two lane ramp, forcing others to wait unnecessarily. I patiently and tolerantly politely, sweetly, having just topped up on chill pillls, asked him was he aware he was using the whole ramp. To which he replied, "yea mate, sorry, I wasnt thinking." It was nice and polite but now hopefully next time he will remember to think of others. Yes , Patience and tolerance in attitude, and action. We can be kind but assertive, rather than lazy about issues.

You would rather train others to do things in a timely, orderly matter, following all the rules and regs or else feel the full force of the law and full force of others.
if everyone in the world were kind, calm and patient, would problems even exist ? Answer ... No, because it is only a problem if you make it one to you. We all know this is not going to happen in the world we live.
On the other hand, if we regulate, train, enforce laws on others there will be no problems either. But this will never happen either. It is all nonsense, neither will happen fully.
I would rather live in a world where the majority were kind, tolerant, patient ect, but we still need law and order.
a lot of angry people out there that need to calm the F down. They get held up at the ramp because someone is taking longer than what they deem necessary. Then they carry on like ya killed their first born.
So yes, calm the F down, be kind, tolerant and patient of others and lend a hand and give helpful advice when needed, and don't carry on like a loonie.

I also thought it was rather an ironic post 😂 but as I'd had a few beers I didn't want to say something as it would have appeared that I hadn't taken my chill pills. I still get irate at people at the ramp but I am lucky as I am usually with friends or family who are more tolerant than I am and they calm me down and are happy to wait. My niece was out with me the other day and after some comments from me about various behaviours at the ramp and on the water she asked whether these people got taught anything and had to have a licence.

On reflection a neighbour who retired and never driven a boat in his life decided he would like to buy a boat so booked in with the mob a couple of doors down from us to get his licence, $150 and a day later he is proud as punch with a licence, no learners period, no instruction on ramp etiquette, doesn't remember how to read beacons and has promptly forgotten all the rules and regs. This would have to be a fairly common occurrence as I see the training vessel on the water frequently and as I would imagine their failure rate would be non existent this would explain the behaviour of many boaters and PWC operators out there. The other thing I have noticed is that contrary to what the govt tells us we are a very illiterate country as these same people obviously can't read the signage, or just wonder what the bigger number 6 in the red circle means.

Oh, the chill pill is just starting to take effect, better go and smile at the missus.

Agree Dignity I was down at caloundra a few weeks back and their was a jet skier hiking and I mean hiking up near the Coastguard, would have been close to 100kmh. I watched him for a while and if he was a 100 metres from shore then I'm alf's brother from melmac. Someone will get killed down the passage and it's just a matter of time, and i'm not just talking about some poor sap having a swim as if these things hit a bloody boat at that speed especially a tinny you have the potential to wipe out 2 or 3 people in one collision. I'm not anti jet ski, but these things are big and heavy and people (some, not all) need to realise their is more than jumpling on one and pulling in the throttle.

111, Should have dropped in and said hello, we had the same thing, jet ski passed us less than 5 meters away doing about 30k with his young son then about 2 min later back on the other side doing 60 know, WT- he had 300 meters of clear water, worse still what sort of behaviour pattern is he instilling in his son. Unfortunately this same behaviour extends to boats.

Better take some more chill pills and move on as this thread is supposed to be about ramp etiquette.

Re: Boat Ramp Ettiquette. Important Things

Yeah you see it all to often and with the narowness of the passage in places and with all the boats their you wonder sometimes weather it would be worth while to ride their ( 100 metres from shore and 30 metres from boats doesn't leave a lot of room in places for opening them up when it's busy ). If your travalling at 100kmh and you get distracted and your observing the 30 metre rule, which some obviously don't then even someone following the rules can clean someone up right royally.

Re: Boat Ramp Ettiquette. Important Things

That 30mtr rule is actually 60mtrs for Jet Skis.

And don't start me on those Jet Skis, I have one and get embarrassed when I get lumped in with the DH's.

I actually got eyeballed the other by a few boaties because I was doing 6knots within the 60mtr restriction... their eyes were saying " WTF is wrong with you ? Why are you obeying the rules ? ".... hahahahaha
