    The 620

    So,
the furuno 620 second hand unit.
Would you recommend this sounder as a second hand unit if all appears to be working well? From what I can see $500 seems reasonable with a standard trannie. Going on to the 5m glass boat. Fishing both in estuaries for jack and offshore up to 100m.
    thanks jim

    Re: The 620

A while ago there was a thread started from one of the forum members that had a problem with the 620 holding bottom with a P66 tranny at speed no matter what he did re-positioning the tranny.

He bought a new 627 and all his problems disappeared. Perhaps there was a software update in the 627 compared to the earlier 620?

    Re: The 620

I love my 620. Also on a 5m glass boat. I get a pretty reasonable bottom picture at speed. Good enough to pick up bommies while travelling. I think a lot of the noise is because of air movement. When your bumping through the rough stuff so much of the hull ends up out of the water that air ends up getting bubbled through under the transom. I have thought about moving the transducer right down toward the bottom of the hull but haven't ever gotten around to do it.

Transom mount airmar P66 mate. I put it on a slide but it wobbles around a bit being such a big transducer. I think it would benefit from a firmer fit with no wobble. I have also heard of people filling the gap between the slide and the transducer with sikka/plasticene etc to give a smooth transition from the hull. This is something I want to try. Use the slide to get the best reading by varying the vertical placement then lock the transducer in place and provide smooth transition from the hull to it using plasticene. Should stop the wobble too.

Sounds like it would lock the lot, provided you had the depth absolutely right! Im just worried about spending 500 clams on a 3 to 4 year old out of production sounder, with no warranty etc.

    Re: The 620

I had a 620 with a P66 transom mount, very good item. I would think that 500 is a bit on the high side for a 2nd hand one now? Unless maybe you know the person you're getting it from and the condition history of the unit...
Very easy to use sounder, I had issues with it losing depth at speed, I moved the P66 several times and had it nearly right in the end, but would still occassionally lose depth at speed, then I sold the boat. If you're happy with the condition and it has no issues, it's a good unit.

    500 with a new p66 .
Have a look at the back it should be clean and not discolored.
    They are a good unit

Too late for this little black duck. I can't afford to spend that coin on what might be a dud.
