    Crank battery distance

Hey guys just wondering about putting my crank battery towards the front of my boat, it will be about 3 to 3.5 metres away from motor!! 420 explorer with 50etec! Any help will be appreciated!!

So what type of help are you after????

I think he wants to know if the battery will still provide full cranking amps after it reaches the motor some 3/3.5m away... Right?

Sorry guys was in a hurry, as bowds13 said, will I loose to much cranking amps that far? Extra fuses etc? Is it to far away?

    Re: Crank battery distance

apart from the obvious length you would have to increase the cable size too to allow for voltage drop, but it is do-able

    Re: Crank battery distance

I recently did a cable upgrade on my estuary boat.

    80hp Yamaha fourstroke.
7m cable length to battery under the nose of a 14ft boat.

Used 4b&s cable. (Was a pissy 10mm2- dropped to 5v when cranking)

    Very minimal voltage drop now.

    Do it!

    Re: Crank battery distance

And another internet myth is launched & perpetuated...
    http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/sho...art-F80-Yamaha

Voltage drop is proportional to cable resistance which is proportional to the cable cross sectional area.
Used 4b&s cable. (Was a pissy 10mm2- dropped to 5v when cranking)

    Very minimal voltage drop now.
Doubling the cable CSA should have halved the voltage drop yet you went from a Voltage drop of some 7+Volts to minimal....see the myth?

You inadvertently fixed the high resistance connection or cable fault by changing the cable, nothing more, nothing less.

I don't want to sound mean but that's how these myths get started.

    I'd use 2 B&S (2 awg) myself.
