    close call last night ....

well it was getting late ....not much action ...out in the maroochy river with my son ...laying on the rear lounge relaxing chatting with my boy...i hear someone coming up the river....closer....closer ....holy shit i sit up as this guy goes past at 60ks an hour maybe 1 meter from the back of the boat cutting across our anchor line missing the bow by centimeters.... grab the spotlight and start yelling at the guy ....about 80m in front of me is a small tinny no lights on ...he slows enough to miss the small tinny by millimeters .....so now the guy in the small tinny is screaming at the ######....he continues another 100m up river stops....drifts over in the current and runs into another small tinny anchored fishing ....WTF .....are there really people this stupid.....fast forward to to this morning went to the local markets with the wife and kids....just happens to be next to one of the local boat ramps...my son says to me there is the guy from last night...what...where...there he is sitting in traffic just leaving ....so i am out of the car back down the road knocking on his window ..
Picture local markets...packed...guy holding up traffic screaming in this guys window letting him know that if i see him out there with no one around a hospital visit will be needed ....walk back to car...
Would a judge have convicted me for dragging him out of the car and beating him?

look out for a guy with a grey beard in and old orange glass half cab with an old suzuki with faded stickers the guy is an idiot....

Had a bit of a word with him did we

World is full of tossers, those that are not on jet ski's or driving ski boats drive about at night full tilt with no lights usually looking anywhere but in front of themselves.

oh and when they have had their fill of that, they will get their feed of crabs from your pots then spend 2 hours on the ramp!

Re: close call last night ....

Now I know this probable wont go down well but like driving on the road, they should bring in some sort of means test where the older you get the more frequent you do refresher courses or even sit for a licence again...yes there are probable guys who have been on the water all their lives and never had a incident but that may be from good luck than good management...

But having said that ive seen newbies (in their mid 20's) do some pretty stupid things on the water but that's from lack of experience more anything else. if ol mate is like that on the water what's he like getting to and from the ramp in his car towing a boat???

going flat out in the middle of the night with boats all over the place is just stupid...the guy pretty much was speachless...didnt say sorry nothing

I'm not about to howl you down Wayno....but stupid behaviour is not age specific...nor due to inexperience. Stupid behaviour is simply due to the level mental intellect.

You said one tinny had no lights.. Did you and the other anchored one have an all round white light on?

yeah.. wow!! how did he not see you with your anchor lights on??they will usually light up the back of your boat?? That being said i near had a 50ft plus game boat run me down in the seaway one morning in my 3.7 tinny, change of pants was required that morning!

Re: close call last night ....

I used to live in Mooloolaba, used to fish the maloolah river, and remember reading some posts on ausfish about 4 years back.
A guy drove his orange half cabin up the river, and hit a rock ridge in the middle. He asked why rocks weren't put on the maps.........
Anyway he hit it and damaged the hull................

Another post of his was, he had been offshore from Mooloolabah and hit a few waves, there were leaks in the hull, he cracked the hull open, anyway he got them fixed......

    Next post , here's a laugh..................................
Orange half cabin for sale, nice boat...... etc etc......

    Maybe it didn't sell.................

    Buyer beware......................
It's it's the same guy, he hasn't learned anything and should be reported to Qld fisheries before he kills someone, who cares for him?

Re: close call last night ....

several years ago on a nearby lake a 24' boat cut a 16' tinny in half, killing one, the other badly hurt. it was just after dark, and the smaller boat did have his anchor light on.
it took a couple weeks to find the guilty boat and party, they were charged and convicted of agravated manslaughter, leaving the scene, and a few other charges. probably drunk, but can't prove after the fact. sentenced to 12-15 yrs in prison i think. not long enough, i feel.
they never found the decedant, the lake is over 600' in places.
another boat ran over a canoe, in daylight, killing a girl. i can't remember the outcome of that.

i nearly broadsided a sherriff's boat under a bridge in a canal leading to the lake. they had turned sideways to adress some kids fishing there, oblivious to anything bearing down behind them. i had to take quick evasive action to avoid them, as did the half-dozen boats behind me. the cops did look quite stunning in their raybans and spandex shorts though, i must say.

a lot of people simply can't conceive of the thought, knowledge, and skill it takes to operate a watercraft, let alone a car or even a bicycle for that matter. think of how stupid the average person is and remember that half of them are dumber than that.
    standing on a bridge
    watching water rushing under-
neath it must have been much harder
when there was no bridge just water

Re: close call last night ....

Sounds like you need to yell at tinny for not having lights and maybe check that you're lights are well visible too, just to be sure(maybe they were obstructed and he couldn't see them) Lights should be visible from 2nm away, which let me tell you most are not. I have a constant problem with people without the proper lighting on their boat. I have come very very close to hitting quite a few boats. If you don't have proper lighting DO NOT fish at night I hope you reported the tinny that didn't have correct lighting.

Re: close call last night ....

Lets all be serious here, before going down the path of "Refresher courses", and what light was 100% visible and so forth.....

It doesnt take a rocket scientist, or even a dumba$$ to figure out that travelling at those speeds in a RIVER is just plain stupidity and dangerous. Theres no training or refresher courses that will fix stupidity, and would just be more useless red tape in an already clouded recreation.

The guys a ######## and thats that, and if he ever has an accident (Likely), lets just hope it only involves him and some rocks, not some poor bloke fishing with his son.
