Thread: Targeting a red bag

    Re: Targeting a red bag

Well written Keith and thanks for doing so. We seem to get reds as by catch so your info might assist with us targeting them.
I am so happy to wake up in the morning.

    Beats the alternative!

    Re: Targeting a red bag

Awesome read! Wish I could get some of my customers to read it and also some mates! I see it so much, the guys doing the massive rod lifts on little picker bites. I have my way I like to fish for pearlies and it is frustrating when I get the guys striking at the small undersize ones on the bottom then when guys have pearlies on you tell them not to pump and wind but to just winch them and some guys lose every single one half way up. Some people cannot be told and then they wonder why they get towelled up by their mates!

I was thinking of starting a new thread entitled RE: Targeting RED FISH-Everything you need to know how to catch HUSSAR, but the ribbing I'd get just wouldn't be worth it. Or maybe…….

Cheech could also start a thread on live baiting for sharks with HUSSAR!

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot

I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Up here we Use Hussar as baits for real RED FISHS (SHSIIFDER)

Thanks for sharing Keith. I've read a number of articles on how to catch Reds but found yours the most informative. Getting all the crew to fish the same way with the same rigs was very interesting. Now to find out what's a pops knot.
    Cheers

Bruce, its a Centauri knot, so simple, even I can do it.

I think its in the animated knots section. I look at it now & again to remind myself !!

Keith, do you find improved catches using flurocarbon leaders? What brand you using?

    Re: Targeting a red bag

    Apollo,

By catch...mate I know what your saying and it was the same for me for ages. Mate when i first started chasing them on the western side of Hoyskins island I started catching them in decent numbers. If you want to eliminate by catch make sure you stay outside of the green zone and give areas like this a go because we didn't get much else other than reds and cod even though we fished that area for about a year. Flat ground, scattered bait and individual fish. Throw a couple of lures out early morning and go for a troll for a couple of hrs and you will mark enough bait areas and individual fish you will quickly see what i mean and get away from the by-catch because there is little structure yet some excellent reds to be found. Remember mate just set your sounder so your looking for isolated fish on the bottom in a 10 mtr window and your looking for one here and there not a screen loaded with fish.

    Mudcrab3,

Not sure. I know he was using a knife jig but what type I don't know mate.

    Smithy,

The amount of times i see guys pump and wind when its not necessary is unbelievable and yes mate even from guys who can fish. I'm like you and nearly pull my hair out. I usually last about 3 or 4 explanations and then I give it to them....oih what the f$%k are you doing!!!! I suppose you can't do that to your clients mate. I recon rex Hunt needs to be shot for teaching everyone how to pump and wind. Its a pity they didn't see the Peter Pakula video and learn to do it properly with a short stroker. A lot of people don't realise that a fish needs slack to dislodge a hook and unless you are going down with the exact same pressure you are applying while winding or pumping with then you are changing the pressure on the hooks. The easiest way to stay hooked up is to keep consistent pressure on the hooks by letting the rod do the work and just winding once the fishes head has been turned. Mate this is why i hate short strokers in some circumstances because there is just no give or room for error for the average punter.
I have to say the most reds i see lost on our boat are the same way every time. I'm sure anyone who has fished for reds can attest that they drop them the same and thats if you give them any slack they can throw the hook better than any fish I've encountered. Usually its when guys go from holding their rod under there arms on the initial hook up and then put their rod into their gimbal belt latter in the fight giving the red a rare moment of slack line....not on!!! This gives the red enough slack line to dislodge the hooks unless they have been set exceptionally well.
I realise I'm not telling you anything Smithy you don't know already mate I just thought i'd throw it out there because some guys may think that pumping and winding is always a good thing when in fact on certain species like you mentioned with pearlies is the opposite.

    Perko,

Yes i believe it does so I use FC100. i bought a heap from ######## a last year and got it cheap. Its expensive but I think its worth the dollars.
I want to believe that it doesn't but i recon it does make a difference and i wouldn't ever go back to using synder or black magic or any of the other lines I have in the past because the one i use for the last few years has proved to be good. I do still try others but i like FC100.

    Again, fond memories…...

Wind you knob & don't lift the damn rod up.Lift that rod & I'll crack your knuckles with the pliers!! Keep constant pressure & stop whinging like a girl, just wind like a winch you pussy!! LOL

So the majority of people that read this are lazy, unknowing and unthankful? Because I'm pretty sure that most who read this appreciate Keiths efforts.
The difference is that Keith does it for fun and a feed and you do it for a living so you have to be good at it.
I wonder why you struggle for deckies?

    Re: Targeting a red bag

Awesome read keith and very informative mate.
The rig you use for trout out fishes any other rig i've seen and also capable of landing good school reds as well.
I have now converted about 10 others to using that rig and none have looked back.
