    watched a trailer strap brake

A guy was winching his 5 mtr ali boat and the nylon strap snapped right as he was almost there.
Having a close look it looked like UV damage , even the stitching was degraded.
He said he left it outdoors and the sun just got the last 20 or 30 cm , it was faded .

My spectra rope gave away about 2 months ago from the same problem.
Luckily i could cut off 1m of it and retie the hook back on.
Definitely weathers like any other strap or cable.
No way i am going back to straps or galv cables though.

Get an old bucket trim a slot in one side and place it over the winch if your boat is outside. That's what I do.

No biggie, re tie the hook on and replace properly when you get back. I always carry spectra rope in the boat for that very reason.

And some people think a winch strap is all you need to keep the boat on the trailer.

The new dyneema stuff is UV stabilised. I think the modern spetra is too. My yacht has dyneema rigging, and it has a spectra shroud over it to save it from UV damage.

Had a wire cable give up the ghost on me on a steep boat ramp one day with the boat half on to the trailer, that was an interesting experience. New thicker wire cable and half a litre of lanolin based goop poured over the full spool and never looked back, not a spot of rust in 8 years.
