Yea mate I have been using them since 1st of February they are good just make sure you update them regularly mine froze a few times otherwise they are great don't trust them with your fuel either. I ran out and it said I still had 73l on board.
this was due to it freezing whilst I was heading anywhere with distance

    cheers scott

Scott, a friend is having similar issues with his GMI -20's. How do you update their software?
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

It's quite easy just need a micro sd card. Look up garmin website and type in updates for gmi 20 it will bring up a list might as well as update the sounder at the same time.
it will most likely be the same update copy to micro sd ( it only needs to be a 4gb ) put in sounder and it auto updates

Ditto here with Garmin freezing problems. We have a 751xs and 2 x GMI20's, very happy with the lot except for the occasional freeze and also inaccuracies in fuel as noted by others. All 3 instruments read different values of fuel usage... perhaps some are freezing and then unfreezing themselves, I don't know. Went for a short spin the other day with 140L in the tank (as read on all 3 gauges) and this is what the various instruments said when we finished up (all on the same NMEA network with Suzuki 140)....

    751 plotter: 2.2L fuel used, 138L remaining
    GMI20 #1: 10.5L fuel used, 130L remaining
    GMI20 #2: 12.1L fuel used, 128L remaining

A bit concerning that 3 units from the same manufacturer on the same network all come up with such wildly different numbers! Talking to Garmin/installer about it this week. Other than this issue, fantastic gauges, absolutely love em. Very flexible and configurable.

How do you go about updating it if you don't have a Garmin Sounder? Havn't been able to find anything on the web regarding it.

    Re: Garmin GMI 20

The engine sends fuel flow data to the network, and it seems that each gauge, separately, uses that data to calculate fuel used, feul economy etc.

So, if a gauge momentarily freezes up, then starts again, it will miss some engine data and its calculations will threrefore be out.

This explains how 3 gauges on one network with one engine can all have different fuel used results.

The solution will therefore be to stop them freezing up. If its a software issue, as suspected, hopefully a software update should fix the problem. First step would be to check the gauges current software version, and compare it to the latest one available from Garmin. Should be on their website.

Yes I agree moonlighter, I think you're spot on. The units are freezing up periodically (perhaps even just internally, the user interface may still be fluid) and missing random chunks of fuel usage data from the motor. I will see where this goes, fingers crossed software updates to address this seemingly long standing issue are not far away!
