    Question All aluminium sealed rivets??

    Fella's,
Anyone know where i can buy fully aluminium (stem and body) sealed rivets? I've been looking online and they all seem to come with steel mandrils. I'd really prefer them to be the sealed type not the blind type as they might be used on a fully sealed self draining deck. Also how important is the grade of aluminium? The boat is 5083 plate but i've never seen a rivet in that grade,
cheers in advance for any pointers!

most ally rivets are 5053 which is fine...i use powers rivets...can get them at most bolt/fastner shops...ally stem doesnt come in sealed and doesnt pop off as strong....if you want strength use stainless steel and coat with duralac....dont need it strong use ally rivet/mandrel seal with sicka

go to any boat place that has yacht/sailing supplies, they should keep rivets for all occasions.

I would have used monel (I think that is what it is called) rivets for strength but I don't know if there is any galvanic reaction with ally so am probably barking up the wrong tree.

I seem to remember that Monel is an alloy of Nickel and Copper, (plus a few other "things") can't imagine Copper and Aluminium being all that flash together in salt water.

In my experience the boat and marine dealerships know very little about rivets and you will just end up with plain old allow with steel centre rivets. Recently I pulled the centre section of floor up over my fuel tank and re sealed / riveted it back down, I needs a 100% blind rivet corrosion proof. Did of bit of research on the net and with some specialist faster distributors and soon found there heaps of types/grades/styles of rivets for many specialist purposes. I ended up with an all alloy (including the centre mandrill). Forget the alloy grade but their normal use was for riveting water and chemical tanks, excellent result. Main point is go do your research with people who know and you will find many different options. I got mine through Coventry fasteners, go to industrial style specialist fastener outfits, forget the marine shops.

Yep, any fastener specialists will have them, but most will only sell in big quantities, that's why a sailing place is where to go, they will have small packs.

May I ask what you are using them for? In a marine environment, a stainless rivet with stainless mandrel will usually suffice. If you are worried about corrosion then duralac is your friend,

Might be able to use aluminium bolts depending on what you're going into.

You will still end up with corrosion issues. Aluminium on boats is typically 5052 and those bolts are 7075. Obviously the potential is a lot less than aluminium and stainless steel, but the problem still exists nonetheless. Solution is to use a jointing compound like duralac.

I should have done mybresearch as it seems it is used in the marine industry but there are issues around monel as per below quote from WE.
"However, because of the problem of#electrolytic#action in salt water (also known as#Galvanic corrosion), in shipbuilding monel must be carefully insulated from other metals such as steel. The New York Times of August 12, 1915 published an article about a 215 foot yacht, "the first ship that has ever been built with an entirely monel hull," that "went to pieces" in just six weeks and had to be scrapped, "on account of the disintegration of her bottom by electrical action." The yacht's steel skeleton deteriorated due to electrolytic interaction with the monel."
