    More whiting

Went to my spot this morning out front nudgee. Only boat there. Started fishing about 7am. A few more boats cameover mid morning.

choppy early but then flattened of mid morning.

Ended up with 80. I thought that is enough cleaning.

Quality was a little better than last week.

bait was Squid and prawn pieces.

Mate had a running sinker rig. He was constanly digging the hook out of their gut. Just about every fish swallowed the hook.

i then did him up a paternoster rig and the problem was solved.

Good run home about 12, and back to Margate boat ramp because the mongrel council closed the ramp to let some dickheads fly their kites.

What a joke. Kite flyer closing our ramp.

We are the ones who pay the fu@#$ng boat rego to pay for the ramps. The kite flyers can piss off.

    Nice catch Seahorse,

quick question regarding paternoster vs running sinker rig...I've alway used a running sinker rig and have at times had sessions where have to dig out hooks (not every time), why is it that they don't on a paternoster rig?

    Cheers

    Re: More whiting

I think its because the running sinker has about a metre trace and the bait just floats all over the place and the whiting have to chase it and bites are normally real quick that they go the bog swallow.

With a patanoster, the bait is just about on the bottom, just above the sinker, then the other hook is only about a foot abouve that.

in my opinion whiting feed of the bottom so dont have to attack the bait so fiercely as it is just stting there.

i find that 8 out of 10 fish are caught on the bottom hook.

i would be lucky if i get 1 hook swallow out of 50.

As i said before my mate was getting hook swallow on every one until he changed over to pata noster, then no more.

Thats just my therory. I might be miles of the track. A lot more experts on here than me.

    Re: More whiting

I've only ever used a paternoster rig with whiting (even as a little kid back before any of us knew it by that name ) and Dad always said that the hookups were clean like that because the way the rig is set up with the fixed sinker on the bottom, there's weight on the hook from the moment they hit it. That helps set it and discourages them swallowing it. Also means they hit iot more aggresively when they feel the weight. Makes sense to me.
But, as a disclaimer, Dad also told me whiting don't bite in the rain Usually on pouring days when I was bugging him to go fishing.

    Re: More whiting

So with a pato rig for whiting, do u get a heavier sinker so it sinks straight down next to the boat, or cast out with a lighter sinker?

    Hey guys,
What boat ramp has closed and what were the circumstances?

    Narmstrong.
i never cast. I just drop straight over side of boat. Just got to match the weight to the run in the water.
you just want to stay on the bottom. Use Tru turn hooks.

i just have a dropper for the sinker. Use a teardrop that has a swivel at the top. Just feed line throught swivel and loop it over. That way you can take sinker of without retieing.

i would prefer bit to much weight than not enough. There is no need to fish light, like people say.

once again thats just my opinion. Others may disagree but i always get a feed.

    Re: More whiting

Nice gee up Kingcray!!! It was great today, the SE was really getting those kites flying high!

Thanks Seahorse, I'm hopefully heading out next weekend or the one after that and will be trying the paternoster rig....

Just for clarification, if you don't get many fish on the hook a foot up from the sinker, can you tie the higher hook closer to the dropper sinker or does that just tangle up??

I've you tubed paternoster rigs and there doesn't seem to be a general rule on distance between hooks.

Would love to hear from others regarding this set up as i've never done this before and keen as mustard

    Cheers
