    Prawn star lures

Anyone ever had any luck with them? I'm from rockhampton region and looking to get some just want to know if they are worth getting or where to get them I've looked in bcf and I've only seen the detachable sinkers available I've caught a few types of fish on HB and SP lures just would like to give these a go if any one has any tips or just personal stories on them would be great to hear about.

    Cheers, JB.

they seem like a hassle to rig. youd be better off with zerick shrimp or cherabin.

Hi jb, if you like the look of them just get some atomic prongs, great action and looks like a yabby swimming, I use the 3 inch for flathead.

    Re: Prawn star lures

I bought a few ewhen they first came out. They definitely did the business on the port of Brisbane bream the times I used them. They are a bit of a bastard to rig and keep un-fouled as they are very sticky (ie hook anything within 3 feet of them it seems). I havent used them since moving to bundy 5 years ago a the newer equivalents are better imho (eg atomic prongs etc). The prawnstars are good lures, don't get me wrong - just bit of a pain to use.

Thanks scorpo92 and alleycat, I'll look into those do they go well on the barra and king salmon? I know the threadies are a fussy eater when it comes to lures that's why I looked at the prawn stars as I've seen decent results from them just wondering on your luck with yours?

Up north I would go the 4 inch prong but using the 3 inch I catch lots of flathead, snapper and 2 months ago off redcliffe I hooked and landed a jew a little over a metre on an atomic prong, I posted at the time..

    Hi JB.

I use the ZMan 4" Scented Shrimpz in the natural colour all the time when I am up at Weipa and they are great fish catchers. Barra love them, as do jacks, threadfin, cod, bream and a whole heap more species. I have even used them offshore and caught lots on them there as well. I remember anchoring up in a creek up there one day and just casting them on lightly weighted jig heads up against a drop off along a mud bank. We were just letting them drift along the bank with the tide and the barra just kept coming out and nailing them. We would have easily caught and released around 40 fish in the session.

The great thing about them is they are tough as nails and last for a long time. I have tied one on at the beginning of the week, and it is still there and catching fish days later, unless something big takes the lot back into a snag and keeps it. I have probably caught over 20 different species of fish on them over the years, both up north and down here in Moreton Bay.

If you are looking for a prawn style lure, I highly recommend them.

Also have a couple of mates who used the new Zerek prawns and shrimps recently on a trip down the Wenlock River in the Cape and caught lots of fish on them as well, so thats another one to consider.

    cheers

    Re: Prawn star lures

You both have made me change my mind on getting the pawn stars lol fishing isn't supposed to be difficult, I'll get a pack of the atomic prongs and a pack of the Zman shrimps I'll get a few of both 3" and 4" in natural but is there any other colour you recommend on them both?

    Re: Prawn star lures

I use the natural colour mostly, but have also used the glow, holographic and new penny colours. They all work. I mainly stick to the natural in the creeks up north as I am looking to imitate the prawns that might already be there. We did catch some nice coral trout on the new penny on the shallow reefs around Gove a few years ago when we went up there.

    cheers

    Re: Prawn star lures

I either use the one with a dark green back and white belly or the pink and green, both are deadly, go the berkley salt water pro heads as light as practicable for conditions..

Alley's onto something here!! I can honestly say I've caught more flatties on Atomic Prongs/ Guzzlerz (now called PLazos I believe) than all the other sp's PUT TOGETHER.... and funnily enough in the green & pink combo too. Second place is the glittery gold colour.
One thing I have been told by a few gun prawn star users to is to rig the Prawn Star BACKWARDS. When you twitch it it looks like it's fleeing and when you give it a bit of slack it glides forward.
Have a gander at this, hope it helps....
