Hi guys off to the lure expo this weekend. Looking to stock up on some barra lures for a trip to AWOONGA in February next year. Any suggestions on what I should look at this weekend.
Hi guys off to the lure expo this weekend. Looking to stock up on some barra lures for a trip to AWOONGA in February next year. Any suggestions on what I should look at this weekend.
If Alan Dolan is there with his Lively Lures stand, see him and grab some of his Arafura Barra lures in either 130mm or 150mm sizes. They are my go to lure in the dams for barra. Great casting lures and even better for trolling, and are tough as nails. They get down around the 4 metre mark on the troll and are great fish catchers. We have caught dozens of big barra on them in Monduran, Awoonga and Peter Faust dams over the years. Best fish on them to date is a 130cm fish caught in Faust in October last year.
Other good trolling lures are the RMG Crazy Deep Scorpions, and the Tilsan Big Barra lures. The Tillies are only good for a couple of fish before they start to split or break bibs.
Will most likely be at the expo myself on Saturday.
cheers
Jeff
Thanks Jeff any specific colours?
Jeff is dead on, I've used all of those at Awoonga to great effect. I've always been partial to green and red or green and yellow lures but my mate showed me that any colour works. I too have found that the Tilsans break after a few fish. One I'm partial to is the Predatek Jindavik in yellow and black.
Cheers,
John
Alan Dolan will be there. There should be a smaller Arafura this year too.

I fish because the little voices in my head tell me to
The colours that I prefer to use are as follows - For the Arafura Barra lures my favourites are Green Fluoro and Pink / Yellow Barra. Other good colours are Elton John, Bleeding Mullet and Gold Bleeeding.
For the RMG Scorpions the 2 best colours are R7 (Flouro Green) and R21 (Chrome Silver Multi). Although last October, a mate brained them at night in Faust on the Red White (Qantas) colour in a crazy deep.
For the Tilsan Big Barras I pretty much only use the Mango colour. From the above, you can see that lures with a lot of green on them are pretty much my go to colour regardless of the brand. That is probably because once I find a colour or lure type that works for me I tend to stick to it. I have other colours in all of the above lures and despite heaps of trips to the dams in the last 8 or 9 years, I have never put them into the water.
cheers

Depends on what you are into. All good advice for hardbody type lures above. Dont forget soft plastics as well though. We tend to use the squidgie slick rigs (black/Gold seemed to be the pick) or similar and re rig them on a weedless setup. You can throw these things into the most horrible looking places and almost guarantee you will get them back - unless something eats them. The other thing to take if you are into it is some soft plastic frogs for surface fishing - I like ones that float when rigged on a hook without a weight - usually use berkley. Be warned though - frogging is as addictive as crack once you start to get it right and the rest of your lure collection may well see very little use.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Now that I have a handle on HB lures in Awoonga. Any other suggestions on suitable plastics and frogs and what size and colour would make the job complete.
Check out Twin River Lures as well. I used them up the bush recently and was very impressed. A white one with a little spot of pink underneath was a real gem.
