Thread: What polish do I use

Wink What polish do I use

So I have had my boat at the Fibreglassers for a while and also at the boat shop getting motor serviced. After getting my boat back there are several scratches on the outboard cowling which are very noticeable, I'm not sure who did it but it's done now.

My question is what sort of cut and polish can I try to use to at least fix this a little bit? Do I just use the same stuff that you use on a car? What are outboard cowlings made out of I'm guessing some sort of plastic? Is there a special type of polish i should use on it?

Also while I'm at it I might give the rest of the motor a normal polish should I use the same fibreglass polish I use on the hull or just a normal car polish like turtle wax etc?

    Thanks for any help

Re: What polish do I use

Is that a cut and polish for the scratches or a general polish for the rest of the motor you are talking about?

they supply the hole range for fibreglass restoration !
google them up, find a local distributor.
a mate of mine owns a fibreglass shop, specialising in boat work, transom's floors, restoring hulls etc, that's all he uses.
seen the results he gets, amazing.

    G'day

Personally only Farecla for me, with a little menzerna thrown in (very high end german polish).

In reality you can use any good quality polish with a FINE abrasive, make sure you wash the outboard thoroughly beforehand, and follow up the polishing with a wax to lock all the good work in.

Re: What polish do I use

Hi blackened I had a look at those websites all the different products are overwhelming and confusing. I have a cut and polish for our cars will I be safe to use this just on the small scratched areas of outboard? I will then use a standard polish to do the whole outboard? Basically I just want to know if my car cut and polish will damage cowling because it's plastic? And when you say FINE abrasive do you mean a fine cloth or what?

    Thanks

Fine abrasive i mean a polish with a fine abrasive in it. Let the polish do the work not so the material you use.

I cannot comment on what you have specifically but if it's a reputable brand such as mothers, meguiars or 3m etc it'll be ok. To be sure in the exact product you use, try it in an out of the way place.

By the way, what motor is it? depending on the brand and year it could be plastic, fibreglass or even a type of paint.
