Not long to go till I will be doing some fishing up the Cape. I went out to the Kerr Reef last year for a quick look. We landed some small GT’s on the troll and picked up some small cod on a drift using bait. The weather was not the best so we came back in. I would like to know if any one has any info on how to best fish Kerr Reef. I would love to get a few trout or any other reef fish for that matter. Any info would be much appreciated. Regards Dwane
Mate - do a search of past threads on Mapoon or Kerr Reef - Daintree Boy and i have put up a few posts with tips for fishing this one over the years.
As a quick one though - current direction plays a big part in getting onto the fish - the southern edge has no real edge - just slowly comes up - so hard to find a pressure point that concentrates bait if the current is running to the north - on that tide you basically have to find a decent ledge that's angling onto the current and concentrating the bait - there are a few to be found sounding around on the western side.
however the northern edge fishes really well if the tide is running south - you'll find some good ledges/lumps there and will catch pretty much every reefie going out there when they are on.
plenty of good macks to be had trolling the western and northern edges as well - get off the reef proper just past the drop off and you'll go alright.

Thank you very much for that information. I had a look at the old threads that you mentioned. Sounds like you blokes had a great time out there. The day we went for a look we did 1 lap round the whole reef before the weather come up. It was a lot bigger then I expected.
With the run along the reef to the north and south, dose the run line up with the tides? e.g. out going tide the run will be north?
I will also be spending a few days fishing the Namaleata creek. It also sounds like a fishing hot spot!!
In September last year there was no shortage of spanish mackeral with up to 10 fish been landed in a 2-3 hr session in the morning before the wind would pick up from the east.

its been awhile - but yeah from memory - north current is out tide - timing is a bit off to the Weipa tide times (closest published site).
The wind is the bigger factor for you out there - SE all morning and Wly in the arvo (give or take) just got to come home before the wly gets up - sometimes waiting for the tide will see a messy trip home........
Snapperbasher<br>A mate of mine has been camped at the Pennefather for 3 weeks now and when I last spoke to him 2 weeks ago he had been getting some big blue bone and fingermark on the reefs out the front of the Pennefather river. Next time I talk to him I will give you an up date. He was going to tow his boat around to Mapoon boat ramp and head out to the Kerr. I cannot wait to hear how he went!!

Awesome dwane!
yeah the reefs off pennefather are loaded with big fingermark... I was up there this time last year but didn't take my boat... It's coming with me this year :-)
Sounds like your onto some top advice there. I also found the Western edge to show better drops. Mate dont forget to fish some of the small contours circles that you can see on your map, and also do a few circular laps out around them keeping your eye on the sounder, I find these very small patches to hold some excellent fish. And at night.
