    Noosacat 5.2 Owners

I have enjoyed the 20+ years I have been a plate ally monohull owner but I can't say the same for my knees and back.

The jolting, jarring and thumping of our typical, short sharp, choppy local ocean conditions have now taken their toll and I am considering crossing over to the dark side of dual hulls.....if only to alleviate the ride comfort.

It seems many pro-fishermen on the SE Qld coast fish out of cats and there must be a good reason for it.

I have never ridden in a cat but have been passed many times by them traveling at speeds I was unable to tolerate in my plately....both following and into a sea.

I would greatly appreciate anyone willing to share their knowledge and experience with 5.2m cats in particular the Noosacats.

    regards,

    Gary

5.2 noosa is a soft ride. Not super fast. Bit flighty in a bit of rough ocean. I rate them behind a 5.2 kevlacat and 5.5 sailfish. But a heap better than equivelant monos

I fish on a mates 5.2 KC and it is a very good boat. Heaps of space and rides really well. The one negative is that it doesn't like a head sea. It slaps under the tunnel and makes for an uncomfortable ride. It is always amazing to see the difference when it gets rough and you accelerate and the ride gets better, unlike a mono.
Remember to always log on before heading offshore.

We should hold an open day M&G for the cat/mono owners/lovers to compare how they all go in the rough?? whos up for the challenge?? then this would be a fair debate??.

I agree with the other comments and although never owned a Cat i have ridden in them.

I have however spent alot of time on Hyrdrofields i owned a 6.1 for years and enjoyed & loved it to death. It also hates a head sea but i would not hesitate to but another one. I know a guy down south just got a new one so they are still being made.

What a great problem to have buying a new boat good luck.

    Im with towie0,

6.1 hydros are pretty hard to beat for for boats that size. Rare a hens teeth but. MY old mans had one since new, I had one for a few years, sold it and brought a 6m mono, missed the hydrofield so I sold the mono and brought the hydro back and put a new 150hp merc 4 stroke on it. couldn't be happier.

There a good allrounder with plenty of deck room and there safe as houses.

Yep that sound like a fair contest, just put the 5m cats and monos together, the 5.5's together and the 6m together and so on, not too sure how you could really compare though?

I have a 5.5 sailfish having come from Mono's. Having read everything online about cats in this size I am glad I didn't go for the small noosa cats as if they are any flightier than mine I would suggest they are too flighty for me.

I'd be more than keen to do a meet and greet comparison, might be a good opportunity for me to get some tips on driving the thing as I am still very much in learning phase. Coming from Ribs more recently the lack of stability underway and at rest in comparison is hard to get used to. Was fishing next to a mate in a 5.6 hydrofield last weekend, he was quicker in the head sea and far more stable... no doubt he had a sore back at the end of the day though.

    Cheers,

Sounds fair. Compare the monos while we are waiting for the cats to get home? Hands up all 520 NC's/ NC's can do 40 kts? 30? oh about 25? Thats cute.....

Going to need some pretzels over here

without getting too far off topic, I dont think a "race" is any sort of comaprison, that is very dependant on HP, a stability contest would be won by any cat hands down, so that's not fair, a slalom course would be won by any mono, so thats not fair, so.... how do you do the "comparison"? there is plenty of 5+m cats that can do 40 knots, but outright speed is not the issue/necessity for a fishing boat.

100% right there noelm, a comparison would be a hard thing to do, but interesting.

skippergary, I fully hear where you are coming from, I did ( before I bought my current mono) want to try and get a run in the 5.7 webster, now I know die hard cat lover's don't rate the single engine cat, but a mate of mine bought one, based just out of Portland, and he absolutely raves about them. He's been out in some nasty nasty stuff and he said its impressed the hell out of him. had 6mt plus mono's all his life, first cat he's owned.
Me, I sort of like the idea of a twin motor set up, and my plans are very similar to yours gary, years of working on the tools are taking their toll and my medium term plan is to change up to a cat in around 5 years, and that will see me out for sure !
probably over that time frame their will be more advancements and hull improvements, so I watch with a keen eye at the minute..............

Like i've allways said though, there's well setup cats for ride and not so well setup, a not so well setup one will bang harder than any mono.

I agree Feral that tunnel slap can be very bad.
Twins for security IMO - one breaks down you have a way home & have spares if both break down LOL
