Ok so never had to repair/replace one of these before so couple of questions:
1. What is the part at the top and is it expensive to replace? (I'm talking buying parts myself and replacing)
2. Are these units easy to work on? (I'm no mechanic but can hold my own with most things)
3. Currently still works but obviously lots of corrosion evident, when it fails what what will happen? Is this a problem that would make you not take the boat out at all? (am thinking of being out on water and it fails.....am I going to run in to major issues or will it just be that the tilt will stop working?)
That is as Fed has stated, the motor for the hydraulic trim and tilt. Clean up the rust as best possible and treat it. Pay PARTICULAR attention to not damaging the wiring. After you have it cleaned up, regular treatments with lanolin spray should very much slow the problem or stop it in its tracks.
Ok, I regularly spray this area down with lanox so I guess this is the result. When you say 'treat it with a rust killer' what would be a good product to use?
