Tell ya whats good fun, wait for school of sea mullet to swim by and rip the herring jig thru the school. Hook into one of them on really light gear and that will keep you busy for a while... but like all have said, the cast net is the go..
100% right with the cast net,a lot of good advice here,I try and keep quiet and sneak up on my usual spots,they spook easily,well these ones do.If I walk to the water yapping to a mate they're gone when I get there.If I stay quiet I may only need one cast.Get good at casting then find the fish,you'll do fine but I'm sure most of us have days where ya just can't find them. Good luck its all part of the fun.
As u are putting along, u see a good sign on the sounder, hasn't the school already past? As the transmitter is on the back of the boat so u are seeing what u have already gone over. Do u turn around and cast over that spot? I've never caught bait with a cast net obviously. If anyone is heading out this weekend, and plans on casting for bait (and has a spare seat) I would love to come and have a go and have a fish at the same time. I get all my mullet on side scan driving around.....see the mullet 3m out port side on the sounder....pull up ...net out ...wait till you think they have caught up ...cast and bring in 20 mullet....
or up the small creeks at night pull up listen for the jump...motor over that way....time it... throw ....
also when practice casting in the back yard make sure, if you have a dog,the yard is clear of land mines.not pretty getting them out of the net.Personally I wouldn't buy an expensive net first time to,i've lost a few and its very frustrating.happy casting
Finally had a bit of luck today. Pinkenba ramp to the left. Put a bit of bread in but murky water meant I was casting blind. Had about 20 casts in the one area and got 5 poddies in one of those. Had a bit of a play with live baiting this afternoon but no luck, but at least progress in the bait gathering phase. Where I was fishing I did have my cast net and was constantly burleying with bread to try get a few more. Only saw a couple and can completely understand what has been said about how spooked they become once they see you. Had a bit of fun practicing skills on the puffers. Funny story, first livie to cast out come off hook when I cast. Re baited and kept going. While later notices small poddy in my burley so got the cast net out. Full stealth mode engaged. Got him. Mark in his tail where I put the hook through the one that come off. Same one?? Poor bloody thing. Must have had a death wish.
This morning I stayed in the same 5-10m of beach casting 20 times. I finally had some luck on about cast 5 or 6 I would guess. Read earlier that a few bad casts and might as well give up on that area? Was this just a fluke that I'm unlikely to see again? If you have a couple of casts with no results move on/re burley/wait?
After about ten minutes its still worth a shot in the same area, but if i put in a dud cast i will usually move away for a little bit and cast elsewhere.. Good stuff on gett'n a few at the ramp, one thing as well mate if your fishing the morning it can be worth gettn the bait at night (i know i keep harping on about night time) poddies will live in a bucket with an aerator for 24hrs no dramas at all.. You should also get a few prawns there too (best livebait ever IMHO)
well done,thats a good spot there,it does inspire you to keep going when ya get a few.You can keep casting all you want sometimes you get lucky,it good practice anyway.You'll be more inspired when you catch ya first fish on the livie you caught
