    Garmin gauges freezing

So since my 1st service I have noticed my gdi20 gauge freezing at least 2 times each trip. So much I have to kill the power to the boat to get it to work again and some times when I start the NEW Suzuki it rev's high with no throttle at all . Hence had to use the coast guard as ran out of fuel today
With my gauges saying I still had 69litres of fuel on board has anybody had asimilar problem or can I get some advice please

ha that's kind of funny and deja vu for me too, ive got 2 x gmi10 gauges with my df140 and I ran out of gas once and was towed in the seaway by vmr and the gauges told me I had 40 odd litres left but it was bone dry! I thought suzis were so good they didnt need gas lol. I don't understand how it gets it wrong as its a direct nmea feed from the motor itself. ive never had them freeze up though.

glad to hear everyone was okay as it did get pretty lumpy out there today and its quite an experience being towed in a boat. What time did you get towed in as I didn't hear anything on the vhf?

im going to reconnect a regular fuel gauge as all the wiring from my old sender unit is still there - at least I can double check the level.

If you have a sender in the tank you can hook up a gamin fluid level sender to indicate what level is in the tank on the GMI gauges. I gotta say I think your GMI20 is faulty freezing up like that

    Re: Garmin gauges freezing

It does sound like the gauges are faulty. I have a yammy but it is set for a 10% margin in fuel usage, so I am supposed to have 20 litres left when empty i.e. a 200 litre tank and I have calibrated it at 180 litres as being full but this can be changed, is this possible with suzis.

I do keep a check on my fuel usage after each trip though there are times when I have used up to 10 litres or more than the gauges have told me although most times it is reasonably accurate. There will always be times when usage is more/less than what the gauges tell you but I suspect that the calculations behind them are subject to so many variations that it is wise to allow for some discrepencies as I don't believe that the gauges actually measure the amount of fuel flowing through.

I also found that filling the boat at home seems to be more accurate as I maintain the same level and fuel flow into the tanks as well as keeping the boat on the same even keel, the bowsers are generally too fast and sometimes create airlocks in my tank as heard by the popping. I do have one servo near me that has a slow pump and this works fine and is seems to be more accurate but it is such a pain to get to that I rarely use it.

thats a idea i might recalibrate the amout to 190l instead of 210l for a 20l saftey but it still would not of stopped the fuel running out over the weekend as the tank said 69l left
