    Lowrance chirp

Hi, I am in the market for a new gps/sounder combo unit and am considering the new lowrance elite 7 chirp unit. Has anyone got one or does anyone have a different unit with chirp. I mainly fish offshore.

    thanks

From all that I have heard the Elite is great but why would you not pay the extra $ and get a HDS 7, 9 etc Touch model and get a side scan?

That certainly will be what I will be doing when I upgrade as it gives you a huge advantage in water up to 60mtrs as you can see out the side of your boat as well as under it!

    Just my 2 bobs worth,

On a previous boat I had sidescan and I didn't find it particularly useful offshore, it was great in estuaries etc when chasing bait. I have been eyeing up the hds7 / 9 as well as you can get a chirp module for them. More research needed I think

    Re: Lowrance chirp

the elite chirp range is an interesting catch. it is CHIRP captain. but not as we know it. lowrance "chirped" its existing transducer . instead of a new transducer with new CHIRP elements in it. so yeah the elite chirp range will def give better target seperation and noise rejection etc to the outgowing elite range. but its not in the same kettle as other models.

as for CHIRP. yep. highly recomended . its silly to go anything else these days.

    do you have a budget?
what sort of depths are you hitting?

the lowrance sonarhub "the chirp module" is fairly pricey for what it is "being it also contains the lss2 module.. something i think was a bit silly but oh well" so when you price up a hds7+sonar hub and transducer your pushing 3 grand.

id be sugesting the garmin 751xs with a Airmar TM150 chirp transducer "same transducer used in lowrances sonar hub" for $1900

Thanks moose - my budget is up to $2500 so the Garmin is definitely within range. I mainly fish in 30 - 60 metres of water with the occasional trip out to depths of 100m.

    cheers
