    Autopilot installation cost ripoff?

What would you pay for a Autopilot installation , Std Simrad VRF with compressor, I was Quoted $ 900 MAX, end up paying $ 1800
No interface installation as I already got a Simrad NSS. $ 900 for parts used?. Did pay for the installation kid as well.

so were you quoted 900 for the entire job. so. no more to pay. that covered labour/parts and materials? was it a marine joint or?.
i mean 900 is about average . all depends on the boat etc. we just did a few installs on some houseboats.. nice and easy and big .... but some smaller trailer boats.. guh the time it takes to feed cables.

Were you given an hourly rate? Were you given an itemized account? Did the installer contact you through the job & advise of any problems? Have you asked why the price went north?

My wife's company sells heat shrink terminals & tube to a number of marine electricians throughout Australia & none of them give a firm quote. They provide estimates but nearly everybody works on hourly rate unless it is a dead easy job & there are few of those to be found. It is always harder than it looks.

Having said that there is an obligation on the installer to contact the client if there is going to be a cost blowout.
    ROLL TIDE, ROLL.................

    Regards,
    Peter

    Thanks Peter,
Yes I did get a itemised account, I also did pay for the installation kit, and no they did not inform me about the extra $900 parts list, and they are a well known marine outfitter in the Gold Coast Runaway Bay Marina. Would like to see where all the items were fitted for the parts that is on the Bill.

I was more than happy to pay for the max estimated cost for the installation , but the fact that they took a day longer and no mention of extra cost, and not calling me back re delivery time realy got me upset. Got it from other sources that I am not the first one to be nailed.

Rig the boat today to go out tomorrow , had a look at the back and found hydraulic all over the place, start the motor and had a fountain of oil from all the connections. Only 3 of the 9 connecters had some type of plumbing tape on them, I can't even mention all the other muck ups, took some photos as well, took me 6hrs and help to fix the hydraulic fluid and seal all the connectors . Could have been worse, Lost all steering on the bar heading out. Would not recommend Marinonics in Runaway bay Marina at all.

Got on the Water and the autopilot was not working, phoned Marinonics and they couldn't believe it.Got it back at them Yesterday and they said the invoice for the parts were a mistake and they refunded me for $549, still $ 400 short from the quote that was given, took them another 5 hours for them to fix the autopilot. Hope it works now.
