It has come to that time of the year when I start to take an interest in fishing the surf. When I arrived in northern NSW a stinken' northerly was the order of the day. I did what I usually do and spent the early part of the afternoon driving around, stopping at a few spots to watch the water and trying to spot a fish or two. I went down as far as Wooyung. The small tides and low swell meant that their wasn't much sweep on the beach, even with the wind from the north. In such conditions I often look for a bit of sweep as the fish are often on the edges of it.
Wooyung produced a few dart, all returned, but nothing else. I went back and had a look around Pottsville, but decided to give it a miss. The formations were not really my cup of tea. Next spot was Hastings Point. There was a nice high tide gutter, but I didn't fish it, but will certainly keep an eye on it as it should produce fish on the bigger tides. I did have a look around Cabarita which is one of my preferred spots, but just the same dart as Wooyung and they too were released for another day. Next stop was Kingscliff where over time I produced a phenomenal catch of weed. I must have got at least 30 species of various algae, including some excellent lumps of quality kelp. In amongst it though there was some fish, a few dart, which by then I did keep a couple, a flathead, a bream and a few tailor. There were also a few small silver trevally around. Overall, with the northerly and the weed, I was happy to take home a feed, even though their were no trophy fish
