New combo - Humminbird 798cxi vs Lowrance Elite-7 HDI

    Hi guys,

Looking for a new fishfinder/gps combo for our boat. Currently looking at the Lowrance Elite-7 HDI and the Humminbird 798cxi. BCF have pretty good deals on both at the moment - $799 for the Lowrance, $699 for the Humminbird.

The Lowrance has a bigger screen and comes with a navionics gold card, whereas the 798cxi has sidescan.

How useful is sidescan? We fish in the gulf off Adelaide, at depths of 10-50m or so.

The 798cxi looks like it's the better unit, just with a smaller screen and minus the navionics card, but $100 cheaper at the moment.

Also, I see there's a thread on here with people who've had problems with the Lowrance unit.

    What does everyone think?

Definitely the sidescan. Watch youtube vids though and learn how to use it.

Just went to my local BCF was told out of stock. Asked if any other BCF had them, was told by sales assistant who had consulted with manager that no store had them. I could order one in at a premium price and they would give me 15% off." Yippie".

Strange I bought one off the the EBAY site of BCF for the stated price of $699. A very few left so be quick if you want one. for $699.

Dont know if the shop was telling me porkies but I bought off Ebay just to be on the safe side.

Yeah, my local BCF don't have the humminbird in stock, but you can still get it online via either bcf's website or ebay store.

What about the maps? How much of plus is the navionics card that comes with the lowrance?

Basically Can't Fish are all ways out of stock and refuse to rain check. Just tell then you want the contact details for their area manger and they change their tone pretty quick.

on the sounder side of if id be taking the humminbird with side scan. I have a 997si and love the side scan.. Wouldn't go with out it these days

    cheers

Ive been told Bcf won't be stocking humminbird sounders anymore. That's why they have none in stock.

yeah humminbird has pulled out of BCF.
not confirmed but they wernt including transducers in those elite specials either. "this sounds silly to me"
the humminbird SI is in everyway better than the elite series.......but... you pay more. so.. theres always that.

kinda late to this talk. but thought ill add my 2c

Yeah I didn't see any of those Humminbird models in BCF last week.
Had an Elite 5 originally but have just sold the tinny and let that go too.
Bought an Elite 7 last week for my new rig at the mates rates price but the only decent looking Humminbird they had on display was the $1200 odd dollar one and no sign of the $699 one.
Spent enough money on my new boat and spent an extra $2300 upgrading the motor a couple of sizes up from the one on display so the Finance Minister didn't really want me spending another $400 on top of the Elite 7 price...but I'm not complaining anyway.
Funny though she did ask which one I wanted whilst we were in the store, and when I pointed to the 998cxi (I think it was that one), she looked at the price and said "Err..No!"
    Cheers
