First off, I'm a first time boat owner and learning as I go, so go easy . As the title says, my 4 year old ali boat has got pitting/paint bubbling around certain factory fitted components and I'd like some guidance on how I should go about fixing this. Following from that, what's the best way to plug holes in ali boats? I want to probably remove the steps but will need to plug the screw holes.
I should also say that I don't really care about the paint, it's more about ensuring structural integrity.
Any helps or info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Just remove the paint that is bubbling. It's salt getting under the paint work and if un-treated will start to eat at the ali. My 1985 stacer had this issue. The previous owner did not look after. I removed the paint and got it colour matched and re-pianted. The bubbles never reappeared for me. But the ali did start to get eaten away.
Mate, pretty standard for production painted boats these days, stainless fittings and/or stainless screws/rivets fastening those fittings and hence causing electrollosis due to different metal type touching the alloy, hence paint lifting around those points. If you want to fix properly remove the offending fittings, sand back and re touch up paint the effected areas and put fittings back on, insulate the different metal types from each other with tough gell or one of those insulator type coatings (someone on here will help you out with the various options). If possible attach your fittings with all alloy rivets (not rivets with a steel stem) all alloy water tank rivets are the go. If you need to use stainless screws, bolts or rivets then coat them and the hole area as well.
Thanks guys, I'll take the components off and give the area a good treatment. Don't think I'll repaint though, I would have gotten an unpainted ali boat if I hadn't gotten such a good deal on the painted one.
