    First timer at Moreton Bay

    Hey Fellas,

Just signed up to Ausfish and What a great site it is. Would love some advice about Moreton Bay area.. I have in the last 6 months purchased a 5m stejcraft fibreglass half cabin with a 60hp mercury 50l tank and have taken it out in brissy river about 5-6 times now and am really keen to do a bit of fishing and just get out on the saltwater and give it a run around.. any advice at all would be great.. Where to launch???.. Bait or plastics???

    cheers in advance

Depends where ya live regarding best spots to launch.

The bay is a magical place, lots to explore and your size boat will get you around just fine, just keep an eye on the forcasts.

Also depends on what fish you're targeting on what tactics to use, have a good search around the site and you'll find plenty of tips

    Summmertrance,
i think whyte island ramp is the best for me,looks easy to access the bay. i can't wait to get out there and have a look around. sunday is looking like a cracker at this stage.

So we Eventually got out sunday morning around 530 am from whyte island ramp. Pretty easy to put in and pick up there and get out and around.. i thought it got a bit choppy but in late morning but was a heap of fun. didn't venture too far as it was first time out and around in there. did a little bit of fishing just drifting and caught a few flathead biggest being 45cm.. also my mate hooked up twice on something in about 10m water that just ran but he was running light gear and snapped off twice..not to sure what it was but any ideas?

Good on ya mate, as you get more familiar and confident about the bay you will want to push further out, the further out your go the nicer it gets, won't be long before your heading over to straddle or moreton for a day out, but I think 50L is a little small so keep a 20L spare fuel tank for bigger trips to the islands. The bay is rarely flat, you'll get used to it over time and learn impact of wind and tide in the shallow waters of the bay. As for the mystery fish, could be any number of critters from rays to pelagics.

    enjoy

Good work on the fishing trip!
You'll have no trouble getting around the bay, once you get your confidence up!
About the only place I fish is Harry's, albeit at night to avoid the crowds...
As Crunchy said, the mystery fish could be anything. There's a lot o' different critters out there.
This place is a wealth of information in regards to where, when, and how to fish particular areas, so pay attention!
Indeed, it was thanks to this forum that I went from not catching legal squire/snapper, to regularly catching snapper over 70cm! In fact, within about the space of two weeks, I went from catching my first legal squire at about 37cm, to one that was 78cm... (still trying to beat my PB of 88cm). This place is gold!
    Cheers!

You like a feed of crabs glassey90? Still plenty around, many on here drop the pot on the way out and pick them up at the end of the day. While soaking my pots overnight i drowned a few prawns and could not believe how many salmon tailed catfish came in. _ you might have had the same they get quite large. That's why I hate bait, I am useless trying with anything other than plastics .... which is a different story, love my plastics in the bay!

Trouble is Scalem I reckon that as soon as you get a cattie on your line the remaining slime on your gear is like a sex attractent to all the other catties around. They are all over it, filthy buggers.
