    Overhead reel advice please

    Hi gang,

I'm looking for a new overhead and would like one with level wind and lever drag. My searches have found most are one or the other. It will be used for trolling and bottom bashing and probably run 50lb line on it. So tell me your thoughts.... Okay go

    cheers Nic
That's a nice fish you caught... Do you mind if I use it for bait.

I've got a shimano tyrnos 12 with 80lb braid on it. I use it regularly for bottom bashing for reds in 50 metres plus and have found it to be a great reel for the price. Can handle reds easily up to 5-8 kilos.

A talica or similar are nice but bloody expensive.

Thanks Pazz, but does it have level wind. I really like the level wind (cause im lazy) but it's gotta have lever drag as well

Yeah tyrnos and talica are both lever wind.

    Re: Overhead reel advice please

Are you sure about the level wind on the tyrnos? Iv never seen one. Lever drag yes, level wind no. Charter specials can take a beating, I used one for years and caught some great fish on it. The drag capabliities I found were lacking abit when hooked in to big kingies but I just switched to a bigger reel.. Didn't bother me. But for a relatively affordable reel I really couldn't complain about it.

    You mean lever drag perhaps?

I think for a lever drag with level wind the Charter Specials are still the pick of the small bunch. 50lb would be pushing its boundaries though.
Honestly you are better off getting something without a level wind and learn to lay line- it opens up a new world of better and stronger reels.

    Re: Overhead reel advice please

what about the diawa saltist level wind? i know its a star drag but for what you said your intended purpose is it is set and forget sort of stuff no need to keep playing with the drag and it will handle 50pound. PS just remember dont get fingers to close if fishing heavy as they tend to pop if cought at the end of the wind
happy days ahead summer is coming

    Some good input guys, thanks.
I've got the laying line thing sussed but would rather have the level wind. Yes very lazy. 😃
Still leaning towards the charter special. I was more so looking for suggestions on what other reels have these two features together

    cheers Nic

The reason I like the lever drag is I can have some fun with a smaller fish, but then put the hurt on if something big comes by. The whole time knowing exactly what pressure I've got the drag on.

And level wind purely out of laziness 😃

    Re: Overhead reel advice please

I use Shimano Tekotas. Have had them for 5 or 6 years now at least and their level wind system has never looked like letting me down. Star drag, which we upgraded recently when we had them serviced.

The internals are extra HD and I have stopped some big fish with them. Fish 50lb braid over them. Use them at 1770 no problems. I like to keep all my fingers and 50lb braid, big fish and level wind in these reels does just that.

I have 2 x Tek 800's. You could go smaller size if you want to and still run the 50lb braid. We just like the extra capacity for deep water.

The 700 and 800's are rated as 11kg of drag, and the 500/600 are rated at 8kg drag. Based on the 1/3 rule of drag to line breaking strain, you could comfortably run 50lb (24kg) on the 500/600 and still get over 400m of braid on it.

you can also get Shimano to upgrade the drag for you and get an extra 20% drag, it doesn't cost much either. I think it was about $25 and we got it done when we sent the reels in for a service recently.

They are not ridiculously expensive either. $230-$250 depending on the size.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

Charter Special's are great but not for 50lb braid. You will need to go larger. There are limited larger level drags but mainly star drags

You could give an Abu Garcia a try. I use Abu's extensively and they are brilliant reels when customised, and can handle big fish. Jim

    Re: Overhead reel advice please

Bigjimg, I checked out that link on the Abu Garcia, the reviews say that that don't lay line evenly. Have you had this problem at all? I'm interested about the abus because I have a couple of eggbeater abus that seem to be indestructible.

Moonlighter, I had a look at the tekotas and they seem pretty good. I like the drag upgrade option.

Looks like I might have to start getting comfortable with star drag.

Again thanks for the input fellas, please feel free to keep it coming. So much to choose from its good to be able to get advice from real fishermen and not sales people haha.
