Which transducer??

Hi all,
Want to purchase a Furuno 587 , but not sure which Airmar transducer to go with it?
I do a bit of most types of fishing bay/ inshore reef fishing around 20m to 100m ,downrigging also some gamefishing at times (suppose that pretty much covers all depths at different times, mmm)
Have looked at the TM258 and 260 for transom mounts
Its a 6m plate aluminium boat and has been suggested the thru hull and 20 degree tilted element is a better mounting option?
have looked at the ss164 and ss264(duel transducer) as well ???

I have the SS164, 20* tilted element in a platey and get great readings at most speeds in most conditions. Mount it as close to the keel line as possible and say a metre in from the transom. Mine is about 100mm off the keel and about 1.3m fwd of the transom. Originally it was further out from the keel and never worked on the plane so good positioning is crucial.

Hi Alchemy,
What size hole do you need to drill to install the SS164?, I suppose one drawback is if you have to reposition it (like you did), you have an unwanted hole to fill, how did you remedy this?
Also I suppose in shallow water the common problem is the small sounding footprint on 200knz, what is 50khz like (wider beam angle) in shallow water?

I had the hole filled with an alloy plug and welded, then had another plate welded over the area from the inside. Hole size is a about 100mm. What do you call shallow? Mine is good down to 5m, just back the gain off.

I have been told the 1kw 50 is a very good shallow water unit

So when in shallow water (5-10m) you switch over to 50khz to get the benefit over the wider cone angle of the transducer, and the readings are good, is this the general practice?
