    Navionics again, sorry

    I have searched and spoken to mates but I get different answers. Does navionics let you track routes, save marks etc if you do not have an internet connection / signal on iPhone or iPad while offshore. I would love some help. Thanks.

    Not 100% sure but I would assume you would need reception because that's how your position is located, Through triangulation of towers and so forth. Not sure if the phone or tablet would have the ability to communicate to satellites. If they could then routes and stuff would work.

    I've noticed on the gps in the boat that if satellite communication is lost then I'll leave no track on screen untill satellites are aquired again. This leads me to think that if phone or wifi/internet reception is lost then you can't track a route.

    I guess you could still mark spots but unless you had something sending or recieving your position then they wouldn't be accurate.

    Just my thoughts.

    Cheers Nic
    That's a nice fish you caught... Do you mind if I use it for bait.

    The device you are using requires a dedicated gps, not an AGPS (assisted by phone tower), yes lets you create tracks and waypoints.

    There are a number of different versions of the product, I have seen a Iphone Version, a Galaxy S2 Version and an Galaxy s3 version, the interface on each of them was different and all of them were up to date at that time, yet they had different menu structures and ways to create waypoints.

    Thanks for the replies. So do you load maps and then turn internet and wifi off? I have downloaded it for the iPhone. Just need some good conditions so I can try it out. Thanks again.

    Download the maps via your internet connection. There is no need for internet for it to work unless you're using it in conjunction with facebook updates etc (It can do stuff like that). Have a read of the help menu and FAQs, will answer most of your questions. I use Navionics on a tablet and most of the time am nowhere near a sniff of mobile reception, it is not needed.

    Thanks mate have read the faqs but mates have said that it doesn't work without internet. I'm talking about the ability to record marks and routes without internet.

    Mine works 60km offshore no probs. As long as your device has the capability, I have the Iphone 4s, you can do what you need. Have a play with it at home to get used to the menu system for recording marks and inputting them. Like Honda said the menu's are all different for the different devices.
    Remember to always log on before heading offshore.

    Thanks guys. Hopefully test it out this weekend. If I like it I'm going to buy an iPad mini for it. Is it correct that I need an iPad mini with cellular capabilities. Thanks

    Hi all got offshore on the weekend and tried navionics. On the iPhone is the easiest way to add a mark by;
    Tap the '?' mark on the screen, tap the 'Marker' icon and tap 'Add'.
    Seemed to work fine without internet or ph reception. Thanks for the help.

    Jamie, got out this arvo. Had no issue setting up routes between marks. Recorded my track and saved marks. It is growing on me. I turn internet off and just leave cellular running as I was told to do this.
