HDS7 and Stereo Set Up - advice needed

As the title suggests, I'm looking into a new HDS7 Gen 2 Touch for my boat and have some questions about the best way to integrate a stereo into the set up.

As a bit of a background the boat is a Tournament 1750 with a 115 Etec. It currently has a humminbird 587 and I-Command gauges with a lowrance attenna (not sure why). The boat will mostly be used for offshore fishing, and I've had great experiences with Lowrance before.

So I'd like to piss off the Humminbird and stick a nice new HDS7 Touch there instead. I would settle for a 83/200 transducer initially then look into structure scan later on if I can justify using it in deeper water 20-40m. Any advice appreciated.

In regards to the tunes, I know you can get a Lowrance Sonic Hub set up which allows you to control music from the sounder screen, but it appears to only have the old iphone/ipod 3/4 docking whereas the new iphone5's have a different plug. This concerns me as I don’t want to buy something already outdated.

The other option is the range of Fusion stereos, some of which can connect to a Lowrance unit (I think), but there are so many different types and you seem to have to buy a lot of extras to get what you want.

One good thing about the Fusion is you can buy a separate Bluetooth AUX input so you can stream music straight off you iphone without needing a dock or cable. Some other Sounders even have wifi to your phone.

I'd appreciate any input or advice on how you've set up your boats. I'd like to do everything properly the first time.

    Thanks guys

Didn"t know you could integrate a stereo to a sounder. What is the advantage? Would assume you will still need a head unit speakers etc. Just put a Gdek in mine but maybe I made a mistake. Thought the Hds had enough to do.

hey mate. nice boat you have there
yep. forget the sonic hub. not worth it. for the cost. get yourself a fusion RA205. you will thank me when you want to change volume. having a headunit that you can handle touch and change things on "as well as run into the lowrance units"..soon. not yet. fusion link is running a bit late on lowrances" makes complete sense. with the ra205 you have the option of just plugging what ever cable you have into the back via the USB port "be it a usb stick. iphone 3.4.5, android phone etc" or am/fm.vhf. sounds good. works well. same sort of dollars as the sonic hub. in other words "more for less"

in terms of head units. the hds7T is a good unit. i have one. having acsess to pretty much any that should be testimate they have floors and htings that bug me. but on the whole they work well. great recreational level without going overboard. the touchscreen makes using the sonar a breeze. and makes typing in waypoint names. lat/longs dead easy.. two of the biggest gripes on non touch units IMO.

with the lowrance you could link it up with the GoFree WIFI which will stream what ever your looking at to a phone. or tablet "phone, just be able to see it. tablet you will be able to control it"
heres a video i made on that

sorry for cutting the video short as well. a customer walked in. and.. well you know.. customer service and all

there are two bluetooth modules for forusion. the BT100 and BT200. the bt100 has power and RCA connectors that plug into the AUX ports on the head unit. so when your on the AUX setting you will get what ever is being streamed from your phone. BUT! it dosnt allow for two way control "cant skip or pause etc from the head unit." and it dosnt show track and artist on the head unit

the BT200 plugs into the SIRUS/XM port. so no need to power it either. it will alow for full two way. so you can tuck the phone somewhere safe and waterproof and control it all from the headunit. HURRUH for pandora!!

so ... as an option "cos there are many" and factors come into it. like budget and where you like to fish/boat. and map choices and do you like smooth or crunchy peanut butter
    but heres an idea

if you have any questions. open your window and shout.
    moose

    PS:

the lowrance antenna is a NMEA2000 antenna "be it an older 3000 or point one" and its used by your ETEC ECU to work out fuel burn rate and distance left etc. it could also then be joined up to your lowrance "if you go that direction" to add an external option to your unit.

No critism just opinion. Let a sounder be a sounder and a stereo be a stereo. I have a combo unit and will be buying another dedicated gps or sounder because it annoys the crap out of me having to switch from gps to sounder or only getting 1/2 screen view. Currently use a handheld to position over wrecks etc so I have full screen on the sounder.

Wow Moose. I think you answered every question I had and ones I hadn't thought of yet. Thank you very much. My wife actually suggested having the stereo and sounder separate so she could muck around with music while I'm concentrating on sounding/fishing etc. I totally agree now. And I like the sound if the fusion 205 too. So they just have a USB plug in the back do they? I can only find pics of the front. And with an iPhone plugged into the USB you get the read out on the fusion screen and full control?
So I could get a HDS7 touch, a fusion 205 and some speakers to start with. Then later on get the structure scan transducer, and the wifi dongle.
Can you give me some prices mate?
one question regarding your video, which makes me want to get wifi now, could you display a different screen on the tablet to the sounder? Like have the map on one and the sounding images on the other? You can also use an Ethernet cable to duplicate the lowrance screen into a tv can't you?
    thanks guys

sadly you cant run separate screens. "i get asked that daily" and fair enough it would be awesome if it did. but navico "lowrance/simrad/b&g" would be shooting themselves in the foot with that one daddy-o . it would stop people biyuing two units "which you know.. makes money for them"
Still. where i have found it usefull is on my baitboard. i have a polycraft 4.8 and when im fishing .. 99% of the time im facing backwards. away from my screen. so just like my display board at work i just have a cheap asus tablet in a waterproof thingo on my baitboard so i can see what the hap is.

so yep on the back of the fusion ra205 is a usb port that can either have a USB dock "or unidock" or just what ever cable you plug in. plug in the white iphone cable and it becomes intergrated allowing for you to change songs. see track and artist, play and pause etc.

i don't believe the hds range have video out features. with the 9/12" units there is a video IN feature allowing for under water cameras etc.

so i gota ask. what kind of boating fishing do you do. what sort of end game would you like?

I would use the boat primarily for bottom bashing in water from 10-40m and trolling for pelagic fish in similar depths.

But if the weather is too windy for offshore I could still use the boat in the creeks for estuary species including barra.

yeah thats a nice set up there. grouse boat. i have a "very similar " baitboard retrofitted the other week "by week i mean it was .. before christmas.. sigh i need to get out more"

ok i might throw a cat in the mix and perhaps sugest something alternitive to....still give you a great option but might allow for some $$$ to be saved "hahah when do we ever get a chance to save cash in this hobby!"

Re: HDS7 and Stereo Set Up - advice needed

well it all depends on so much.

so listn to this song in the background to keep the happy mood going!

see the way i see it. the HDS is a very modular and groovy unit. it can operate some pretty powerful tech. and its built.. ok i mean.. these guys pour millions into it. yeah you will hear some examples of poor quality. but bound to happen. on the whole. they are ok . they are a bit more pricey however than what some people need.

hense why i was going to mention that echomap 70s. same 7" touch. as a base sounder to the HDS. its BRILLIANT "better in IMO" can/will be able to run downscan "better than nothing" as a fuctional easy to use unit.. it runs rings around the lowrance
..and its hundreds. close to a thousand dollars cheaper

    just a thought

Ok I'm listening. What can this unit offer? A quick search showed not too much difference in price.

Re: HDS7 and Stereo Set Up - advice needed

oh they both have pros and cons . its a better built unit and operates 60% faster. faster map redraws "better map options .. inland etc" faster 10hts gps/GLONAS interal antenna. pinch to zoom. scratch proof glass. thinner. less power draw. 77/200 transducer. built in bluetooth and wifi. hundreds cheaper

the hds. modular. can run many transducers and structurescan, um. prettier menu system?. the scroll back feature works pretty flawlessly on the sonar/map
