Thread: Shallow water.. Down scan or sidescan

Stressless, that's an impressive shot of those barra in the shrubbery. So the way I'm currently thinking is to go with the 598si, partially because the screen is a lot higher resolution than the Lowrance.

If I need normal sounder mode, I can keep my Elite 5, I suppose. Seems a bit flash for a 3.9 tinnie, having two sounders, but what the hell.

The beauty of both Birds and HDS, is that they "look" into snags.

A broadband won't show you a fish sitting inside a nice snag.

I haven't seen the current HDS Gen 2 units in action yet, so clarity may have improved. Leelee may be able to advise here???

My HDS7 Gen1 is antiquated technology, but still gives good results. I'm waiting for Gen 3 before I upgrade.

I've attached one more barra pic with two fish sucking in jelly prawns that I posted to this forum some years ago, the quality, I think, is OK.

Now I've given myself Barra withdrawls, and just booked a trip back to Karumba!!!

With the Humminbird always register the units and get the software updates. I have the 798Si Humminbird. Software has made extreme improvements. The shallow water question is easily answered. I had mine a week and was casting to bream schools in 3 metres of water with soft plastics. I will never be without it.

Stressless and others, thanks for your insights. So I've sold something I don't need, and will now get a Humminbird 798cxi. So I can sell my Elite-5 as well. I thought my days of being excited by tech were over, but no. Feels a bit like Christmas. Whatever the deficiencies, I'll live with them, if I can find them. I'm looking forward to bring able to mark structure. I'd like it to have Wi-Fi, but hell, it's got everything else.

Thought I'd update this thread. I decided to go with the Humminbird 989CX HD SI, and it arrived yesterday. I'm a bit intimidate by this thing. When I took it out of the box, it looked bigger than my boat. I wound up getting it for the same price as a 598, because the new stock is coming in March. I bought it from Regal Marine (chocolatemoose on this forum), and the price was great.

I can't believe how big it is. The screen is massive. It looks like I've gone overboard, but I'm sure I'll get used to it, especially with my fading vision. Now I HAVE to catch fish. With all this technology, it's a sure thing. (I'm smiling while I write this, I don't really believe it).

By the way, it was the advice in this thread that made my final decision easy. Thanks for that, gents.
