Hey what about a Shimano Spheros?........They always got a good wrap and are well within the disposable reel budget?Dan
Confidence.......the feeling you get before you fully understand the situation.
This has been a good thread Chris. It is not that you are clueless but rather fighting the demons in your head. There have been some excellent reels put forward for you to select from but your brain keeps comparing them to your Stella. Dan has just put forward the Spheros range, great choice for your application. Been around for donkeys years and has a great reputation not to mention all the others that have been recommended with equally good reputations although I would probably stay with the 2 main players myself. I hope you let us all know your final choice; good luck with the shopping / choosing / fighting the demons in the next week or so.

Well I just went and had a good look at just about every reel mentioned - except for the SALINA 3 ... TW & BCF never had it
The clear leader in the $300 ish range is the Saragossa - they have a 10000 coming out soon (low gear & bigger spool - same body as the 8000) - wont even consider the Saltist , Penns
Nothing else caught my imagination except for the Stadic 8000 ...... which I could imagine adding more bearings & a drag upgrade (?) it got me thinking.
Yes I also had a play with the Stellas , saltigas & the Catalina
I would buy the Catalina - it really was a nice reel without the bulk of the Saragossa ...... but over twice the price & just a couple of hunnad lower than the Stella

There is a new Spheros out in a few weeks. It has some pretty good specs. I would be grabbing a Salina 3 for under $200 and if it lets you down you can have all the fun of posting it for all to see
The Saragosa is a good choice Chris, it about meets your ideas and expectations at the price point you were talking about. As I mentioned in my first post on this thread I purchased the 8000 which has a fairly high gear ratio for a reel of this size, perfect for throwing metals at surface fish. The limited amount of beach and rock fishing I do these days does not justify going all the way to the top shelf. They already have a 10000, 20000 and 25000 in their line up http://www.shimanofish.com.au/publis...ragosa_sw.html It seems Tackle warehouse in Brissy has them as well as MO

I bought the 3 high speed and haven t a bad word to say about it have it teamed up with a venom .
Brother used it last time he came out and went thru it s paces on red Jew and a large hammer head

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Sounds like its a better reel than its current price, but they cant pitch it to the dearer sect, as so many of their reels are sh... and they don't have an authentic market name or respect yet for mid to higher end gear? My finger is starting to hover above the Add to Cart button. Cmon Nagg Anglers Warehouse! about $179.01 for the 5000 HG !!!! Actually clicked it now after rechecking the price for this post.

Its going to be my mackerel reel for seting livies and floating pillies. May get used a bit for trolling however I like a reel with a ratchet for trolling. Ill post my thoughts up again when I get it, although I have handled one at BCF

I have 3 okuma sallina 2's 1 in a 4000 size and 2 in 5000 size. I love them hence having 3 of them! When I bought my 3rd I was going to get a sallina 3 but I preffered the handle on the sallina 2's. I had one problem with one of my reels where it would jam up and be tight to wind. At about 14 months old. What had happened was the main shaft had bent that attaches to the handle causing a tight spot when you wound. I put this down to some of the big sharks that had been caught with this reel 2mtr plus models bi catch and getting them to the boat. Sent it away okuma fixed the reel no questions asked at no cost to me. Was a thread with photos on here somewere. Since then Have not had 1 problem with either 3 and I am not one to maintain my gear that well.
There's a Salina on gum tree on the sunny coast.
NAGG Cannot comment myself on salina 3 have not used them but went into local tackle store the other day to buy 3 of them to put on the boat and as i buy a lot of gear of them the owner suggested i wait till the new model comes out as the older models were good reels but he has had a few of the later models back with problem and has spoke to okuma and they have told him they will be goin back to the old design after July as they had no trouble with them. This is what i was told by the owner of the store as i said cannot comment my self as never had a salina
A close friend and his mate each purchased Salina 3's before a trip to Kuala Rompin chasing sailfish. First fish on and the anti reverse sh@t itself on one reel, the other just jammed. He has since got his money back and purchased a Catalina. i wouldnt touch them with a 10 foot pole.
I know it isnt new but I purchased a used Stella 10000 from Japan for the same money....
cheers, Mike
I finally got to look at a Salina 3 when I was in Adelaide last Friday - I certainly didn't walk our with one
The handle configuration looks dodgy to me ......
I'm more inclined to buy a saragossa - but even the biomaster looked good but it is a much more light weight reel
decisions decisions
