what brand of 2 stroke oil do you use.

Hi All, I have always just used either Valvoline or Shell/Nautilis in my 2004 90 with 600 hours on it.
Just had it serviced and was told what junk the oil I use is and that I should only use genuine Merc oils.

What are peoples thoughts and what do you use?

My old 25 rude digests anything and everything the same. I can not say i have picked any difference running maybe 10 or so different brands of TCW3 two stroke oil.
My motor has multiple thousands of hours on it since 1995.

Nautilus used to have a bad reputation as a high carbon/ash oil, more smoke, and carbon build up in the engine than all the others. My local Yammy dealer warned against using it in their engines. Not sure if thats still the same....but I wouldnt risk using it.

Valvoline - i used to run it in my Yammy 70 and it went fine, then when I got my Tohatsu TLDI 90 direct injected 2 stroke, i was advised by the dealer that Valvoline was the recommended oil, it had been sent to japan for testing and was approved by the factory and how they were surprised at how good it was.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

I use the caltex oil, doesn't seem as fumey as all the others I have tried. I was told it was pretty much the same as the genuine Yamaha one but I'm not real sure if I believe that.

the cheapest, you just burn the shxt. that said, gulf western is synthetic fortified and lovely and clean looking/ translucent. Yamaha oil on the other hand looks the worst to me.
I buy the gulf western from super cheap auto. cheap and clear.
Whatever oil you use, run through a can of OMC engine tuner (decarbonizer) through the engine every service. It's the go. Also very good for cleaning your carbies when you strip them.

Have used both merc quicksilver and valvoline in my 175 merc. I have done 170 hrs in just over 2 years. I have noticed no difference between the two.

+1 for Quicksilver, am sure it still blended by Fuchs for them. As for Valvoline i am sure the inside of an exhaust plate cover would notice the difference.

I was advised a couple of years ago to try quicksilver premium for my merc 30hp so I tried it, can't say it made any difference until I ran out and still had some good old Valvoline left, bloody thing smoked more on start up and the fumes really smelled, wondered what the hell happened. I emptied the rest of the tank and used it as weed killer and went and bought the quicksilver, motor behaved itself. I wondered if it was because the oil was about 12 months old but from what I have researched it should not have made any difference.

Another vote for Quicksilver - I used it my Merc 90, smoked a lot less than anything else I had tried.
