Hi folks I'm looking at boat with a 2007 130hp Yamaha salt water engine I was just wondering if there is any problems to keep an eye out for with these models.Cheers Shaun.

happy days ahead summer is coming
bullet proof motors, that is why you see them hanging off the back of every boat in PNG
i had one and did a lot of hours and only ever need a service . great motor
I have had two of them-115 hp versions (same motor at the 130 HP has a slightly higher compression and slightly bigger carb jets). The one I have now is a 2000 model (saltwater series ) and one before that was a 93. The 93 model was an excellent model - it was only basic maintenance. It was, it seemed to me, a little prone to having to have the idle speed carburettor jets cleaned but that may have been due to the particular filter that I was using. With the 2000 model I changed to a mercury quicksilver filter and I've never had a jet problem since. I bought that the motor a couple of years ago and it has been faultless.
They are 200 to 1 at idle on the oil injection and 50 to 1 Wide open throttle. The oil injection systems were excellent and inject the oil at the reed valves.
They are far more punchy than what a 115 should have - plenty of torque to being a v4.
The motors can take a lot of abuse I have heard. They were very popular with commercial fishermen from abalone divers to net boat operators, and they seem to be the motor that I see most on documentaries in third world countries where I imagine proper servicing simply does not exist.
If you are someone who like me doesn't get out on the water is much as I would like them this is really the perfect motor - it just starts easily at the ramp even after months of sitting and runs beautifully. I do recommend you use a top grade oil such as the mercury quicksilver premium plus oil for fuel injected mercs which significantly reduces smoke and smell and gives clean running.
Enjoy!

Hey mate, just wondering. I have a 115hp in the salt water and was interested in what you said about the Optimax oil regarding smell. I checked the Mercury website and they state that the Optimax DFI oil is not intended for use in engines specifying a TC_W3 oil which the Yamaha saltwater is.

Would running that DFI oil be damaging the motor or is it just marketing talk? Keen to know as I may switch if it doesn't affect the motor.

Hi Shaun.
I've got a 2011 130 hp salt water series 2 and agree with the above sentiments. Have only done about 50 hours on mine but normal 2 stroke issues aside ( a bit more noiose and smell ) it does a great job on my 6.4 m glass boat. I run it at about 4800-4900 rpm and no matter what the load it happily chugs along at about 50 kpt WOT yields about 60-63 kph.
Safe boating to all
Cheers Greg
Ozy...sorry it was Quicksilver Premium Plus 2-Cycle Outboard Oil which is the oil the dealer said was used on their fuel injected models...I see that Opti uses the next oil up. It's a low ash apparently.

No worries the premium plus is low ash I meant. Not expressing myself well above.
