Thread: Total Life Jackets per vessel ?

Total Life Jackets per vessel ?

I have been advised that the water police are fining boaties for not carrying the correct amount of life jackets on board. It appears that if the vessel is licenced to carry four passengers, then you must carry four lifejackets, even if there is only two people on eople on board.

    Can anyone verify this?

    Straight from MSQ's website:

    Personal flotation devices (PFDs)/life jackets
    #

One of the appropriate size for each person (12 months and over)
on board, except if a person is
    wearing an inflatable diver jacket
and the vessel is engaged in diving activities
I am so happy to wake up in the morning.

    Beats the alternative!

So where did you hear this from? Is this going to be another of those cargo net threads?

    Info from the MSQ website.
    http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/Safety/Inf...at-owners.aspx
    http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/Safety/Life-jackets.aspx
    http://www.msq.qld.gov.au/~/media/ms..._equipment.pdf
None of these links says that you need to carry jackets for the amount of people that the boat is registered for. They say, Apollo has said above, that you need to carry the amount and size for the people onboard.
Remember to always log on before heading offshore.

    I call BS.

Fishing at Mud one day last year, the Water Police pulled me up to check saftey items on board. There were 2 POB and they asked for 2 PFD's - No further questions were asked.

I also call BS. The rules require 1 suitable lifejacket per person on board. Nothing more, nothing less.
Note to self: Don't argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience....

I was informed of this change by a sales person at BIAS Boating Virginia. You would think that they would not be spreading gossip.

My boat capacity is 5. I would never take more than 3 people. So why should I have to buy 2 that ill never use.

I guess for the same reason there is a seat belt for every seat on your car, even though you are on your own! That being said, the rule is as stated, one for every person on board, not potential people (unless of course it is a commercial vessel ,like a ferry)

Hey hey hey Gunna....not all sales people are like that....In my industry, real estate, my license can be suspended or cancelled if I am found guilty of misleading anyone, or even for with holding information.....I certainly would not risk my hard earned license/reputation to spread a bit of gossip or untruth just to make a sale.

Re: Total Life Jackets per vessel ?

Just spoke to MSQ Brisbane office and they confirmed that the requirement in Qld is for one lifejacket of suitable size etc per person on board.

It is Not a lifejacket for the carrying capacity of the boat - unless of course the number of people on board = the carrying capacity of the boat!

Regrettably, some people don't bother to actually look at the rules involved before proclaiming what they think that they actually state. The result is poor advice being handed out.
