Rod holders at the back of tinny?

    Hey guys,

I want to mount up some rod holders strong enough to troll with. My options are limited and I like the idea of the angled cheapy ones you drill into your boat. I've had 2 recently installed on 2 small ally brackets but sometimes my spinning reels hit the boat so they weren't ideal. I see people mount at the rear of their tinny by drilling a hole big enough on the small triangles at the rear of the tinny (not sure what they are called, connect from transom to both sides.) but I do think that this would weaken these brackets and may cause elsewhere to weaken in the process.

    Is this true? I mean it's a 63mm2 hole in a piece that's probably 150mm2.

These are in my boat, and look like they've been there for some long time. These are only the plastic ones, but they have been there long enough to look extremely scabby.

The back of the boat seems very strong, and does not noticeably flex, even with the god-awful heavy Honda 4-stroke hernia generator hanging off the back. It would depend on the thickness of the ally, I imagine.

I don't use mine, because there is a seat between me and them. I can just see me getting a strike, getting excited, tripping over the seat and exiting the boat.

Got mine in that position. No problems at all. Have caught 120cm mackies trolling with a tyrnos 30 hangin in them no drama.

What on earth, Dave? Maybe old white ones ... but if they do break it will only result in a continuation of the angle that the rod is mounted on not going overboard. Do you really want him to put sst on his tinny? And since when does anything scare you?

check out Matilda Foundry at Maryborough, they make flush mounted aluminium rod holders, great for alloy boats. i had 5 delivered to my door for around $90 last year.

mate of mine had 2 bust on him and i have had 1 smashed. nothing wrong with using stainless if you use something like duralac between surfaces (they come with rubber washers anyway) and they last forever.

I've drilled a couple of holes in the wooden floor of my tinny, works well as rod holders and you can swivel the rods around and they don't pull out under load because of the rubber rod grips hold well. easy to grab when going off.

Fatbuoy you mentioned white ones breaking. Are the black better.? I agree that white ones eventually fail loudly!

no, not a drag issue. if anything my drags are set below recommended. simply combined age and sun exposure and a big strike.
